Spring is a fantastic time of year to get away with the family and experience the great outdoors. In New South Wales, there’s plenty of adventure to be found right on our doorstep.

Escape to the Outback, rainforest or countryside

Discover rare and luminous opals, fabulous underground art caves and natural heated springs in the surrounds of Lightning Ridge, in Outback NSW. Tour a real working mine, have a go at fossicking, then enjoy a dip in the naturally heated Artesian Bore Baths, which maintains a temperature of 40 to 50°C.

In Mungo National Park, in southwestern NSW, uncover a starkly beautiful panorama of ancient dry lake beds and sand formations. This UNESCO World Heritage-listed national park is home to the famous Mungo Lady and Mungo Man (42,000-year-old human remains of great significance), and rich in Aboriginal history. Join an Aboriginal Discovery Tour to discover the park’s ancient heritage dating back 45,000 years.

Follow the Canola Trail through the shires of Coolamon, Junee and Temora in southwestern NSW, taking in the spectacular sight of golden canola fields that flower each spring. It’s north of Wagga Wagga, so you’ll drive through quaint villages and gorgeous landscapes, with delicious pit stops such as Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory. In Wagga Wagga, enjoy a picnic at Wagga Beach on the banks of the Murrumbidgee River, right in the centre of town.

For nature-loving thrill seekers, Scenic World in the Blue Mountains west of Sydney offers adventures such as cable car rides and rainforest walks in the majestic Jamison Valley. The Scenic Railway — the world’s steepest incline passenger train — commands awesome views as it emerges through a cliff-side tunnel into the valley.

Little kids will delight in visiting Storybook Garden in the Hunter Valley, north of Sydney. Nursery rhyme characters including Humpty Dumpty, Jack and Jill and Alice in Wonderland greet you at every turn. Stroll through the Sunken Garden, with its 10-metre-high waterfall, enjoy a round of aqua golf and putt-putt and enjoy treats at the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company, located with the garden’s shopping village.

For the water babies

Explore an aquatic paradise in the Shoalhaven region of NSW, a two-hour drive south of Sydney. The beaches are among the most beautiful in the country, with calm turquoise waters perfect for swimming, snorkelling, kayaking, fishing and stand-up paddle boarding. Stroll along Hyams Beach, with its dazzling stretch of fine white sand, then stop into Hyams Beach Store and Cafe for some local fish and chips.

Snorkel straight off the beach at Lord Howe Island, around a two-hour flight from Sydney. The calm, warm waters of the lagoon are ideal for kids, and there’s plenty of colourful coral just metres from the shore. The crystal-clear waters surrounding the island are home to an incredible 450 species of fish and 90 species of coral, making for an astounding natural aquarium.

Be immersed in the ocean-bound wilderness of Montague Island, located off the coast of Narooma on the South Coast of NSW. Get up close and personal with fur seals and little penguins or explore historic Montague Lighthouse and stay overnight. With Montague Island Adventures you can snorkel with the seals and an abundance of other marine life such as sea turtles and dolphins.

Meet the local wildlife

Budding zoologists will love going behind the scenes with the Mini Zookeeper for a Day program at Sydney Zoo in Western Sydney. The program teaches children about animal conservation and provides an opportunity to get hands-on experience feeding and caring for a range of different animals.

Saddle up in the hinterland of the Central Coast at Glenworth Valley Outdoor Adventures, a one-hour drive north of Sydney. Join a guided ride through scenic private trails, which is suitable for all abilities, while little ones can enjoy a pony ride to experience the fun of horse riding for the first time.
