Boasting some of the most dramatic landscapes in Australia, the New South Wales Blue Mountains is a dream destination for anyone seeking thrills that put you directly in touch with nature.

Take a long hike

There are countless walking tracks to choose from in the Blue Mountains, the most challenging of which are best experienced with a professional guide. Life’s An Adventure will transport your backpack and help you navigate the well-trodden Six Foot Track, a three-day hike that takes you along the old coach road from the main town of Katoomba to Jenolan Caves. Along the way to the well-established campgrounds, you’ll visit heritage sites and cross the famous Bowtell Swing Bridge, which traverses the Coxs River.

Tread Lightly Eco Tours offers fully guided bushwalks and 4WD tours that focus on the environmental and cultural aspects of the area. You’ll have a sensory experience that takes you to ancient rainforests, thundering waterfalls and deep canyons with minimal eco impact.

Give canyoning a go

Throughout the Blue Mountains there are canyons to suit every level of experience. Empress Canyon, accessed via the Valley of the Waters track in Wentworth Falls, is considered a perfect option for anyone new to canyoning. Your Blue Mountains Adventure Company guide will help you to ease through the narrow, slot-like canyon, jump into rock pools and abseil through waterfalls.

If you want to experience the renowned Claustral Canyon without getting wet, head to the Blue Mountains Heritage Centre in Blackheath to explore its high rock walls and waterfalls via a virtual-reality experience. In reality, four abseils will take you into the depths of this long and difficult canyon, where the exit track alone takes around four hours to navigate and includes several swims.

Enjoy a natural high

Scenic World in Katoomba offers thrill seekers a chance to travel high above ancient sandstone ravines in its Scenic Skyway cable car, which features a glass bottom and is suspended 270m above the valley floor. The 384m journey across provides breathtaking views of Katoomba Falls, the Three Sisters, Mount Solitary and the entire Jamison Valley. The thrills continue on the venue’s Scenic Railway, which is the world’s steepest passenger railway and descends 310m to the floor of the Jamison Valley at an incline of 52 degrees. The Cliffhanger option allows you to travel at the even steeper incline of 64 degrees.

Go horse riding

Making your way through bushland and open pastures on the back of a well-trained horse presents a great opportunity to engage with nature, enjoy the peaceful surrounds and spot wildlife. A 20-minute drive from Blackheath, Centennial Glen Stables is set in the beautiful Kanimbla Valley and is surrounded by towering escarpments. Riding group numbers are kept low and there are several riding options available, including the Sunset Trail Ride, which allows you to take in the true beauty of the valley.

Also accessible from Blackheath, Blue Mountains Horse Riding is based in the magical Megalong Valley. Offerings include the Deluxe Coxs River Day Ride, which runs for five hours and takes you through paddocks, up along the mountain ridge and down deep into the wilderness, with a lunch break on the Coxs River.
