Dine on hyper-local meals or champagne breakfasts with balloon flights, and savour butterscotch-flavoured spirits or fresh-pressed cider straight from the orchard. If you’re travelling from the Hawkesbury River, north of Sydney, to Mudgee to the northwest, make sure to bring a healthy appetite, a strong thirst and plenty of curiosity.

Hawkesbury to Bilpin

The Hawkesbury region, just a 90-minute drive from Sydney, has a fascinating history. Learn more on a Hawkesbury Valley Heritage tour, run by a seventh-generation local, then stop for a takeaway lunch at the welcoming George Street Loft cafe in Windsor. Afterwards, drop by the cellar door at Ironbark Distillery in North Richmond to purchase award-winning gin.

For a more leisurely lunch, head to Lochiel House in Kurrajong Heights. Here, native Australian ingredients are smartly showcased throughout the acclaimed restaurant’s menu: there’s duck liver parfait with quandong compote and salt and pepper squid with bush tomato.

Take advantage of the appealing landscape and pick your own citrus fruit at Anderson Farm in Sackville (from June to October), or make a booking to harvest apples (from late summer to May) at Shields Orchard in Bilpin, a Blue Mountains town famous for its orchards full of Granny Smith, Fuji, pink lady apples and other varieties. You might also find local apples at Saliba Fruits — just phone ahead to make sure picking season is on. Jam or bush honey is also on offer if you head there at the right time (usually from January to May).

Hillbilly Cider presses the town’s fruit into its signature drink; enjoy its refreshing beverages with wood-fired pizzas at the on-site shed. Bilpin Cider offers 10 cider varieties, including three non-alcoholic versions, at its apple-showcasing venue. Stick around for live music and roast pork rolls with pink-lady apple sauce during its Thirsty Third Sunday gigs, or try one of its picnic options on the farm.

And Lithgow Tin Shed’s menu highlights local ciders and wines from the region as well as ingredients from its own backyard.

Rylstone to Mudgee

For yum cha worth travelling for, there’s 29 Nine 99 restaurant in Rylstone in the Mudgee region. It features a wide range of dumplings, steamed buns and desserts you’ll want to order, as well as a gallery and shop worth browsing. Head to the (literal) hills for De Beaurepaire Wines: its Burgundy-like terroir generates boutique French-style wines. Its cellar door is located in 170-year-old stables, surrounded by picturesque views and more than 100,000 vines. Enjoy organic drops under the shade of wisteria trees at Mudgee’s Lowe Wines. Its on-site restaurant, Zin House, draws fresh-grown flavours from its expansive kitchen garden, orchards and grazing farmland — as well as producers based throughout the region.

Mudgee

For a breakfast to remember, book a sunrise flight over Mudgee with Balloon Aloft and see the region’s surrounding mountains and beautiful valley. The experience concludes with a decadent champagne breakfast at Vine Restaurant & Bar, on the garden-filled grounds of Parklands Resort. At the Robert Stein Winery and Vineyard, you can explore the family-owned winery and chat to the knowledgeable winemakers. Head to its Pipeclay Pumphouse Restaurant to try the in-house charcuterie and a menu matched to wines from the estate (or pick the Mudgee pairing to appreciate the wine region’s diversity).

For something different, try butterscotch schnapps, “Orangecello” and other small-batch spirits at Baker Williams Distillery. Need a fun night out? Consider Roth’s Wine Bar + Cellar: its tapas menu showcases local ingredients, the venue pours 100 regional wines and live music performances are staged every week.

For a courtyard breakfast, visit Artisan on Lewis. The vegetarian-friendly menu celebrates produce from local farmers and gardeners. Check out the shop, which stocks homewares, accessories as well as homemade pickles and preserves.

Enjoy wine flights with local cheese platters at Logan Wines in its all-glass tasting room with spectacular views. The First Ridge Wines cellar door is also architecturally striking: it’s made from shipping containers and is a great spot to sample the vineyard’s Italian varietals.

Located in an inviting laneway, Alby & Esthers is a favourite regional haunt for drinks and share plates. Say yes to the breakfast bowl stacked with locally produced mushrooms, greens, smoked bacon and house-made hazelnut dukkah.

Mudgee Brewing Company is housed in a 100-year-old red brick wool store in the centre of town. Try its signature stout, Mudgee Mud, and ask to hear the intriguing story behind the name.

End the day by perfecting your ravioli-making or sourdough-baking skills at the Little Cooking School and enjoy the results over a dinner with local wines.

Leaving in the morning for Sydney? Set yourself on the right note by sitting down for a satisfying breakfast (sweet potato fritters with smoked salmon, mushroom bruschetta, French toast topped with fairy floss) and excellent coffee from The Coffee House at Parkview.
