In spring, golden fields of canola flowers in the Riverina region and surrounds of southwest New South Wales make for Instagram-perfect images. Explore country towns such as Temora, Canowindra, Junee, Cowra and Coolamon along the way.

Head for NSW’s heart of gold

Canola produces a vibrant yellow flower, which is why each spring Instagrammers are drawn to the Riverina region in southwest New South Wales, as well the Central West region of Country NSW. The state’s main centres of canola production are about 4.5 hours’ drive west of Sydney and home to hectare upon hectare of shimmering golden fields.

Canola is grown for its seeds, which are harvested and crushed to create an oil low in saturated fat. The flowers bloom in spring, generally from late August to October. And the Riverina’s crops are so prolific there’s even a Canola Trail you can follow to find your perfect #canolafields shot.

Follow the Riverina’s Canola Trail

The Canola Trail takes in three Riverina shires — Coolamon, Junee and Temora — that are about a 30-minute drive north of Wagga Wagga, 4.5 hours west of Sydney.

The fields are concentrated around Canola Way, Goldfields Way, Springwood Road and Rannock Road, which form something of a triangle between the main towns of Coolamon, Junee and Temora. While locals and farmers welcome Instagrammers with open arms, visitors are asked to practise canola etiquette and not trample across the fields and precious crops.

Canola isn’t the only draw along the trail. Other highlights include the Junee Licorice & Chocolate Factory (where you can make your own giant freckle) and the Coolamon Cheese Co (don’t miss the native lemon myrtle semi-hard). There’s also the Temora Aviation Museum, and the town’s recently refurbished late 19th-century railway precinct and Railway Temora museum. And the Monte Cristo Homestead in Junee is believed to be the most haunted house in Australia.

Even diehard Instagrammers need to eat: among the area’s offerings are The Little Rustic Pantry and the Ganmain Bakery near Coolamon, and the Roundhouse Restaurant in Junee.

Get a bird’s-eye view in Canowindra

You’ll find more slices of canola heaven around Cowra and Canowindra in the state’s Central West. Cowra has its own annual Fields of Gold canola tours. And you can also see fields in full bloom from the sky: Canowindra is one of Australia’s most popular spots for hot-air ballooning, so take off with Aussie Balloontrek or Balloon Joy Flights.

When you’ve had your fill of golden carpets, there’s plenty to occupy you in this history-filled region. Explore Cowra’s role in World War II as the site of a prison camp for Japanese soldiers at the Prisoner of War Camp Site. The post-war reconciliation between the town and Japan is beautifully encapsulated at the Cowra Japanese Garden and Cultural Centre.

Organic and biodynamic wines are a big story in the region. Add Antonio’s, Rosnay Organic and Wallington Wines to your itinerary, or visit The Quarry Restaurant & Cellar Door for a taste of the region’s best in one location.
