Port Stephens, a 2.5-hour drive north of Sydney, offers everything from surf to sand dunes to koala experiences. Accommodation options are just as varied, with everything from affordable holiday parks right on the beach to resorts with luxe spas and fine dining restaurants.

Soak up the Hamptons vibe at The Anchorage

The Anchorage Hotel & Spa is a luxurious Hamptons-style boutique hotel on the Anchorage Marina. Options include spacious rooms, mezzanine-style loft suites and a villa, all with a classic seaside charm, and many with private terraces offering sweeping views over the water. There are two waterfront restaurants — including award-winning seafood fine diner The Wild Herring — as well as Moby’s Bar (where you’ll find a fine selection of whiskies, cocktails and wines) and the indulgent Spa Lucca.

Float in the infinity pool at Bannisters

Beachside boutique hotel Bannisters Port Stephens is the second Bannisters property in New South Wales. It opened in 2018, following in the footsteps of its successful namesake in Mollymook, on the NSW South Coast. In a prime spot overlooking the water at Soldiers Point, Bannisters Port Stephens has 78 coastal-luxe rooms, including four suites and a breathtaking penthouse. Soak up the sunshine by the stunning infinity pool overlooking the glittering bay, then dine on fresh seafood by celebrity chef Rick Stein.

Gather around the lagoon at Mantra Aqua

Centrally located in Nelson Bay (the largest town in the Port Stephens area), the Mantra Aqua resort features 110 apartments in three buildings, built around a 25-metre lagoon pool with cascading waterfall and heated spa, children’s play wading area and barbecue areas. An onsite gym should keep you in shape, and the resort is right next door to a 27-hole golf championship course at Nelson Bay Golf Club — famous for its resident kangaroos on the fairways.

Stay right on the beach at a holiday park

Holiday parks are a popular choice among families seeking affordable accommodation in great locations. Beachside Holiday Parks covers the parks managed by Port Stephens Council: there are three beachfront holiday parks (Nelson Bay, Halifax and Shoal Bay) plus the Thou Walla Sunset Retreat overlooking the water at Soldiers Point. You’ll also find a range of other holiday parks in the Port Stephens area, including Koala Shores and a couple of parks under the Big 4 banner. Whether you’ve brought your own caravan, motorhome or tent, or need your accommodation provided, options include powered camp sites, cabins, villas and glamping.

Stay at the Koala Sanctuary Port Stephens

Sick, injured and orphaned koalas get some tender loving care at the Koala Sanctuary Port Stephens. And if you really enjoy your visit, there’s no need to go home. After you’ve visited the koala hospital, wandered the Sanctuary Story Walk and taken the Skywalk to get a treetop view of koalas in their natural habitat, you can retire to your on-site glamping tent, room or suite. It’s a relaxing setting, in bushland on the edge of One Mile Beach.
