Looking for Turkish ice-cream, small-batch gin, Portuguese tarts or Mexican food from Sydney’s tamale queen? You’ll find something for all appetites in the inner-west suburbs of Marrickville, Enmore, Petersham and Dulwich Hill.

Marrickville

In 2020 Time Out nominated Marrickville, a 25-minute drive south-west from the city centre, as the 10th coolest neighbourhood in the world. The suburb’s X-factor, according to Sydney editor Maxim Boon, comes from its melting-pot community — the queues outside its popular Vietnamese and Greek eateries are proof of this. Jump in line for a banh mi at Marrickville Pork Roll, slurp beef noodle soup at Pho PHD and pick up spanakopita and bougatsa at Athena’s Cake Shop. Feeling thirsty? Try a pisco sour at the new Peruvian-inspired Pepito’s bar, natural wine and cheese plates at Where’s Nick, beer made with wild yeast from Wildflower and small-batch gin from the Poor Toms microdistillery.

Enmore

Just beyond the popular restaurant and shopping strip of Newtown, Enmore’s main road is abuzz with dinner options from across the world. Colombo Social serves Sri Lankan food with a social mission; Little Lagos is Sydney’s portal to Nigerian food; Arepa Oz rolls out Venezuelan street snacks; and Stanbuli offers fine-dining inspired by Turkish tavernas.

For dessert, you can enjoy Turkish delight, baklava and ice-cream at one of Hakiki’s busy outdoor tables, or stop by Cow & The Moon, which has had steady queues since its almond affogato flavour won a Gelato World Tour award in 2014. For a late-night Trinidad sour or mai tai, venture behind the red curtain at Jacoby's Tiki Bar. At Cottonmouth Records, you can deliberate over your craft beer or whisky order — and pick up something for your vinyl collection, too.

Petersham

Petersham, a five-minute drive from Enmore, is known as Sydney’s Little Portugal and you’ll want to travel here for the Portuguese tarts alone. Find these custard-filled pastries at Sweet Belem or Honeymoon Patisserie. For other flavours from Lisbon and beyond, try the charcoal chicken at Silvas or the feijoada (bean stew) at long-time institution Gloria’s Restaurant, or chorizo, bacalhau and other staples at Charlie’s Deli. Chocolatier João Cadete also draws on his European heritage for his range at One. More Chocolate, but it’s not just a Portuguese love affair in Petersham. Find Batch Brewing Company’s latest location at Public House Petersham, an Instagram-friendly brunch at Tiny Giant or The Pig & Pastry, or Malaysian stir-fries, curries and flame-grilled chicken at Sharon Kwan’s Kitchen.

Dulwich Hill

There are many good reasons to head to Dulwich Hill, a few minutes’ drive further west from Petersham, when you’re hungry. The Mexican food by Sydney’s tamale queen, Rosa Cienfuegos, is certainly one of them. Drop by her Tamaleria and Mexican Deli for a bean-filled tlacoyo, Mexican chorizo taco or vegetarian tamale. Just footsteps away, pastry lovers queue for the canelés, croissants and sourdough loaves at Baked By Keiran. Across the road is popular brunch spot The General Eatery & Supplies, which becomes Bar General on Thursdays to Fridays, with bargain tacos, spritzes and pasta dishes on the menu. The Fold, a Sri Lankan-inspired café serving eggs benedict on hoppers and sambal with coconut flatbread, has become a welcome addition to Dulwich Hill, while Small Talk is getting a cult following for its bagels and pastries. Need another carb fix? Try Alevri.HQ. It first gained attention for its moussaka pie and baklava cheesecake and has become so popular that Roselands and Kingsford outposts have followed.
