Social media-savvy travellers are increasingly choosing where they stay based on Instagrammability. From unique locations to bird’s-eye views and stylish interior design, photogenic stays abound in New South Wales. While you may recognise some of these stays beyond Sydney from your social feeds, there may be a few you haven’t heard of yet…

Bubbletent Australia, Capertee Valley | @bubbletentaustralia

Stargazers, romantics and ‘grammers will fall in love with these magical clear domes near Capertee, northwest of Sydney in the western reaches of the Blue Mountains. Bubbletent Australia’s three transparent spheres, named after zodiac constellations, sit atop raised wooden decks and give guests a spectacular view of the stars at night and the Capertee Valley during the day. Better yet, all three have a private woodfired hot tub.

Kimo Estate, Gundagai | @kimoestate

The three architecturally designed eco huts at Kimo Estate are perched high on a 2,833 hectare farm just outside Gundagai, four hours’ drive southwest of Sydney. JR’s is the original eco hut and provides an Australian country experience for the style conscious. Fergo’s is nestled into a hillside with a fire pit and Sweeney’s is at the highest vantage point of all overlooking the Murrumbidgee River. For an extra touch of luxury — and Instagrammability —all three huts boast a wood-fired hot tub.

Permanent Camping, Mudgee | @permanent_camping

In an out-of-the-way location in Mudgee, a 3.5-hour drive northwest of Sydney, the architect-designed, eco-friendly Permanent Camping tower was built as a retreat from the world for the owner Jason McDonald. Since then he has opened the unique two-storey, copper-clad structure to guests. The ground level has panels which lift up to create an airy living space and take advantage of the stunning views across the Australian bushland — get the perfect shot as the sun goes down. Inside there’s a kitchen and wood-fired slow combustion stove downstairs and a sleeping loft upstairs, accessed by a ladder.

Sierra Escape, Mudgee | @sierraescape

Deep in Mudgee wine country, a 3.5-hour drive northwest of Sydney, Sierra Escape is a breathtaking property with three five-star tents to escape from the world for a while. The glamping huts are luxurious and spacious with wooden floors, huge comfy beds, indoor bathtubs and fire pits. The Dulili and Uralla tents also have an outdoor tub, and the Carinya tent is due to get one too in 2021.

Moonbah Hut, Jindabyne | @moonbahhut

Like a hideout from a classic getaway movie, Moonbah Hut has two secluded log huts — Moonbah Lake Hut and Moonbah River Hut — in the Snowy Mountains, just 25 minutes’ drive from Jindabyne. Just as appealing when covered in snow or surrounded by summertime greenery, they are cosy inside with stone fireplace, wood-fired cooking and fishing prints on the wall. Outside you can fish in the Moonbah River, ski in winter, rock-climb in summer or kick back on the porch with a book and a wine..

Halcyon House, Cabarita Beach | @_halcyonhouse

Once a faded motor inn, Halycon House on the Tweed Coast is now a snapper’s heaven. The room interiors, by renowned interior designer Anna Spiro, are the hero here with artfully combine bold textiles, antique furniture and travel tokens. Outside there are vintage bikes to borrow, a Mediterranean-esque pool and the renowned restaurant Paper Daisy.

Retro Pod Camping, far North Coast| @retropod

Cute and quirky, this quartet of vintage caravans can be set up in and around Byron Bay on the far North Coast for a fun weekend away. Retro Pod Camping owners Helen and Pete are keen vintage caravan renovators and will kit out your ‘pod’ with everything you need, including linen, towels and tea.

The Atlantic, Byron Bay | @atlanticbyronbay

In the heart of Byron Bay, The Atlantic entices you to live like a local in one of their four open-plan beach houses. Each house has been beautifully restored with bright, airy rooms, travel paraphernalia adorning the walls and a shared kitchen. On the compound you can hang on a day bed in the tropical garden, lap the glittering pool, and fill your camera roll with dreamy snaps.

Ocean Farm, Gerringong | @oceanfarm

The luxury four-bedroom, four-bathroom Ocean Farm holiday house is, of course, located on a working farm overlooking the ocean. You’ll find it outside the South Coast town of Gerringong, a two-hour drive south of Sydney. The interiors of the spacious house are lovely, but you’ll be jostling for position to get just the right shot when you see the serene infinity pool looking out over lush green slopes to the Pacific Ocean.

Tilba Lake Camp, Central Tilba | @tilbalakehouse

One of NSW’s original tiny home holiday accommodations, Tilba Lake Camp has four charming tiny homes (and one bell tent) nestled in coastal paddocks with views of the lake, ocean and mountains. Located in Central Tilba on the far South Coast, the cute pods are ideal for couples and have queen beds layered with soft linens, kitchen with fridge, microwave oven and stove top, outdoor private fire pit and access to a swimming pool.

Milton Park, Bowral | @miltonparkcountryhouse

Milton Park has that grand manor charm typically reserved for the English countryside, and indeed the conversion of the homestead into a boutique hotel by two doctors in 1984 was inspired by their love of the great country hotels of Europe. The elegant hotel in Bowral, a 90-minute drive southwest of Sydney in the Southern Highlands, is now a popular wedding destination. It stands serenely in grounds of cypress-lined drives, wisteria archways and bluebell fields, and boasts an oft-photographed ivy-covered pool house with French villa-style detailing.

The Shed at Broger’s End, Kangaroo Valley | @brogersend

For a photogenic Aussie farmstay experience, look no further than The Shed at Broger’s End in Kangaroo Valley, two hours’ drive south of Sydney.
