There's nowhere better to sample craft ales and lagers than the very place they were brewed and with dozens of breweries in regional New South Wales open to the public — here’s just a taste of the offerings.

Brew north

Heading north from SydneySix String Brewing Company in Erina on the Central Coast serves handcrafted beers inspired by world-class techniques, all complemented by a menu featuring lots of local produce. A short hop to the northwest, it’s not all about wine in the Hunter Valley. At Sydney Brewery Hunter Valley in Lovedale, be sure to try its darling product, Lovedale Lager, a Munich-style lager that combines three types of German hops to create a citrus aroma and toasted malt backbone.

Back on the coast, in Port StephensMurray’s Brewing Company lives by the slogan “no boring beer”, brewing ales with distinct personalities like the Angry Man Pale Ale and Coco Hops Coconut Porter. Sharing its home with Port Stephens Winery, Murray’s showcases some of the region’s best product in one location.

At Black Duck Brewery and Bar in Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast, craft beers are made the traditional way in a friendly, relaxed atmosphere. Continuing north, at the eco-conscious Bellingen Brewery and Co. in the river town of Bellingen, you can pair artisan brews with delicious pizzas.

Brewed in Byron Bay (and in nearby Murwillumbah), the beers at Stone & Wood reflect the laid-back vibe of this far North Coast town. Their flagship Pacific Ale is easy drinking at its best, with a punchy passionfruit and citrus aroma and a flavour with a bitter twist. Sample it at the Byron brewery, where you can also opt to sign up for a tour.

Head inland for some funky creations

You can get a taste of craft beers from Armidale in the New England region at Great Hops Brewing Co. and The Welder’s Dog, where your tasting paddle can also include pink pea-blossom lemonades and traditionally brewed farmhouse ginger beer. Twenty minutes south of Armidale, in Uralla, the New England Brewing Co. prides itself on being a small brewery in a small town that produces high quality brews by hand. All beers are brewed with a single key ingredient, pale malt, locally grown in nearby Tamworth

Go south for suds

In Gerringong, a two-hour drive south of Sydney, drop into Stoic Brewing to sample the latest tap rotation, which could include anything from Hazy Pale with grapefruit notes to a winter-warming Peanut Butter Stout.

Further south, in the Shoalhaven region, Cupitt’s Estate offers the best of both booze worlds, with its own microbrews on tap at the bar, and wines to taste at its cellar door. And at Longstocking Brewery in Pambula on the far South Coast, a wide range of craft beers and ciders can be enjoyed along with a plate of succulent Sapphire Coast oysters, with woodfired pizzas available on weekends.

Head west for a pint

In the Mudgee wine region, 3.5 hours northwest of Sydney, stop in at Mudgee Brewing Co to try its legendary Mudgee Mud, an imperial stout that’s rich, smooth and complemented with hints of aniseed and liquorice. Around 3.5 hours west of Sydney, Badlands Brewery at The Agrestic Grocer is Orange‘s longest established craft brewery, with a constantly rotating selection of Badlands beers on tap. Pair yours with a bacon and egg roll made with Badlands beer jam.

Or sample brews in the southwest

In the Riverina town of Wagga Wagga, in southwest NSW, the family-owned Thirsty Crow produces a wide range of brews; at its taproom you can snack on cauliflower popcorn while working your way through its quirky ‘Murdered Brews’. Borambola Wines in Gundagai, also in the Riverina, produces a Tuckerbox lager beer as well as cider. You can sample them both at the cellar door.

In the nearby NSW Snowy Mountains, toast to a great day’s skiing, hiking or fishing with a craft brew at Jindabyne Brewing, started up by Jindabyne local Karl Veiss. Across town, you can also sink a Kosciuszko Pale Ale at The Banjo Paterson Inn, home to the Kosciuszko Brewery.
