Sydney is known for its camera-friendly beaches and landmarks, but its dining scene is worth a close-up, too. Eateries across the city are filled with Instagram-worthy experiences, from a brunch spot lavishly adorned with 17,000 flowers to a bakery’s signature cake that’s also an international social media star. Don’t forget to add ‘The World’s Most Instagrammable Café’ or Australia's most highly awarded distillery to your travel itinerary, either.

The Grounds of Alexandria

Since opening in 2012, The Grounds of Alexandria quickly became an Instagram sensation. What once was a 1920s industrial precinct in inner-city Alexandria has been transformed into a much-visited destination that houses a café, garden, coffee roaster, florist, kid-friendly animal farm (featuring Selena Goatmez) and more. The enchanting garden should be your first photo-taking stop — the bougainvillea-adorned arbour is laced with twinkling lighting. Or book in for a beautifully styled afternoon tea in the lush glasshouse.

Hyde Hacienda Sydney Bar + Lounge

Located on the third floor of Pullman Quay Grand Sydney Harbour hotel, Hyde Hacienda Sydney Bar + Lounge is every Instagrammer’s dream: it has spectacular harbour views, plush baby pink chairs, and well-styled greenery and wisteria hanging from the ceiling. Don’t miss the photogenic cocktails, including the Campfire Espresso martini topped with toasted marshmallows and the vibrantly coloured Harbourside Hibiscus.

Speedos Cafe

Speedos Cafe in North Bondi was named ‘The World’s Most Instagrammable Café’ by a travel website in 2019. The eatery’s easy strolling distance to Bondi Beach was one deciding factor; its rainbow-bright dishes also helped the café clinch the title. Its menu of vegan and gluten-free options includes Instagram-worthy pancake stacks served with caramelised bananas and chia, Cookie Monster tacos and a granola bowl with fruit and spirulina that’s as blue as the neighbouring ocean waves.

Archie Rose Distillery Co.

Founded in 2014, Archie Rose Distilling Co. in Rosebery was Sydney’s first inner-city distillery in more than a century. It’s also Australia's most highly awarded distillery. Tour the site and learn how its spirits are produced, followed by a tasting of key beverages from its acclaimed range. Other Instagram-posting opportunities include the industrial-chic design and the charismatic bartenders as they prepare and pour drinks.

No Fail

Watermelon brûlée yoghurt, mango milk, mixed fruit green tea, carbon oolong — they’re just some of the fun drinks you’ll find at No Fail, an indie tea shop with stores near Chinatown and in Burwood in Western Sydney. This home-grown bubble tea brand has secret menu items and serves ultra-colourful drinks in cups featuring a dancing cartoon pig — so how could you resist taking a snapshot?

Black Star Pastry

The much-imitated strawberry and watermelon cake first emerged at Black Star Pastry in the Inner West suburb of Newtown. Chef Christopher Thé originally created it for a wedding and his slices of almond dacquoise, rose-scented cream and watermelon have since been named “the world’s most Instagrammed cake” by The New York Times. You can now enjoy this pastry at the bakery’s other locations in Moore Park’s Entertainment Quarter, the city centre or Rosebery, just around the corner from Archie Rose Distilling Co.

Two Sis & Co.

Any list of Instagrammable cafés needs to include Two Sis & Co. in Pyrmont. The botanical interiors and green tiles provide a striking backdrop for photos of the vibrant menu. There’s the Tasmanian lavender lemonade, which is decorated with flowers, taro lattes that change colour, mermaid pancakes and lattes topped with fairy floss.

Social Hideout

Social Hideout in Waterloo claims to be Sydney’s “prettiest café”, and it makes a convincing case. There are 17,000 flowers suspended from the ceiling and brightly spilling from feature walls, and the menu is just as visually impressive. Milkshakes are served in cute miniature bathtubs garnished with fairy floss, while a Japanese-style omelette comes with a red velvet croissant. Other decadent dishes include Ferrero Rocher French toast, ruby-red panna cotta and activated-charcoal hotcakes with lemon curd mascarpone. The original Parramatta location is also a beautifully flower-saturated space and the menu has Instagram-friendly appeal, too.

KitKat Chocolatory

The first Sydney branch of the KitKat Chocolatory, located in the city centre, offers an immersive, photogenic experience. There’s a dazzling range of exclusive flavours to consider (including a special-edition lamington Kit Kat) and a ‘Create Your Break’ section that allows guests to create up to 30,000 different combinations of the wafer-filled chocolate. You’ll also want to get your camera out for the KitKat Chocolate Train and dessert-rich KitKat Tasting Table.
