Its famous dairies have produced award-winning cheeses since the late 19th-century, and today New South Wales’s verdant South Coast turns out a tasty spread of dairy-to-cheeseboard experiences for the whole family. Here, four spots that’ll serve up holiday memories on a platter.

Keep it Real in Central Tilba

Whether you like your cheese hard, soft or somewhere creamy in between, Central Tilba’s ABC Cheese Factory is the place to stock up. A five-hour drive south of Sydney, this Natural Trust-listed town is the home of the Tilba Real Dairy’s factory, established in 1891. Today, you can watch cheesemakers at work and taste everything from its signature Kinnoul Hill Camembert to Three-Year Vintage Cheddar — all made with jersey milk from its home farm or sourced locally. Allow plenty of time to explore the area to take in its rich colonial and pastoral heritage, as well as the soaring beauty of sacred Gulaga (Mt Dromedary) — an ancient volcano that’s significant to the local Yuin people.

Mix and match in Ulladulla

What’s not to love about artisan cheeses paired with boutique tipples? Drive three hours south from Sydney to Cupitt’s Estate near Ulladulla, to enjoy the best of both. Cupitt’s is well known for its broad range of wines (think: pinot noir, rose and chardonnay) along with a diverse spread of soft and hard cheeses, with everything from Persian feta to goat’s milk Tomme de Chevre made on site with local milk. Learn how to match them during a Cupitt’s signature Cheese and Wine Experience, order a cheeseboard at their award-winning restaurant, try a cheesemaking workshop, and spend the night at their Boutique Cottage — all just a few minutes’ drive inland from the sparkling beaches of Mollymook and Ulladulla.

Taste a new favourite in an historic town

With its rich dairy history dating back to the 1860s, the quaint village of Bodalla is a top spot to discover the Eurobodalla region’s heritage and its special cheddars. Bodalla Dairy Cheese Factory is framed by rustic gardens and picnic-perfect pastures. Here, your family can bottle-feed calves, watch cheese being made, chat to the makers and taste fresh dairy treats at their retro café. While it’s also known for its camembert and labneh, the factory is most famous for its bush tucker-infused cheddars, where the addition of native plants such as quandong, wattleseed and outback saltbush make for a range that’s both moreish and uniquely Australian.

Head for the Bega hills

Drive 90 minutes south of Bodalla to the Sapphire Coast (or 500km from Sydney), and you’ll find the friendly towns of Tathra and Merimbula backed by the rolling hills of the Bega Valley — a must-visit for cheese lovers. The Bega Cheese Heritage Centre is a reconstruction of its original 1899 creamery, and inside you can sample cheddars not available anywhere else. Try the award-winning Heritage Reserve Vintage, a sharp, crumbly cheddar that’s matured for two years. Afterwards, pop upstairs to the History of Dairy Museum, where rustic relics reveal the fascinating history of the valley and its dairy industry.
