BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical Celebrates Back To The Future Day & George Mcfly Day With Special Fan Events
The smash-hit production, winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Musical, BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical had its official Australian premiere on Thursday 2nd October, at the Sydney Lyric, opening to rave reviews and audience praise alike.
From opening night, critics were electrified. The Daily Telegraph called it an “exhilarating stage spectacular that exceeds all expectations,” praising its “astonishingly good cast” and urging readers, “do not waste your chance before it leaves Sydney.”
The Sydney Morning Herald declared the DeLorean’s onstage magic to be “in a different stratosphere of wonderment,” calling the show a “bonanza of ‘wow’ moments at the outer limits of the possible.”
To celebrate Back to the Future Day (21 October) and the beloved George McFly Day (26 October), the time-travelling musical is honouring fans with a week of unmissable bonus events — including a special ticket queue opportunity and post-show cast signings.
QUEUE EVENT – FRIDAY 24 OCTOBER
In the spirit of George McFly’s underdog courage, fans who show up early to the Sydney Lyric Box Office on Friday 24 October from 9:00am will unlock a limited number of $26* tickets to both the matinee and evening show on Sunday October 26.
Fans are encouraged to queue up as early as possible since tickets will be allocated on a strictly ‘first come-first served’ basis. Up to two tickets may be purchased per customer and valid ID must be shown during the transaction. All tickets are subject to availability and cannot be re-sold.
CAST SIGNING – SUNDAY 26 OCTOBER
On George McFly Day, fans attending the matinee and evening performances on Sunday 26 October will be treated to a special post-show signing with the cast. It’s a chance to meet the stars and take home a piece of Hill Valley - whether it's a signature, a selfie, or a memory worthy of a flux capacitor.
So, if it’s your destiny to see the show (again, or for the first time), then make like a tree and get down to the Sydney Lyric on Friday 24th October to be first in line.
Because some things are just meant to be - like a night at the theatre… or your parents falling in love at the Enchantment Under the Sea dance.
From the creators of the original film trilogy, the musical is based on the first film which sees rock ‘n’ roll teenager Marty McFly accidentally transported back to 1955 in a time-travelling DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown. But before he can return to 1985, Marty must make sure his high school-aged parents fall in love in order to save his own existence.
The electrifying Australian cast is led by Tony Award winner Roger Bart as Doc Brown and newcomer Axel Duffy at the wheel as Marty McFly. Roger Bart, who originated the role in London, brings his “boundless energy and comic genius” to Sydney, with critics calling him “a complete delight” (Limelight) whose “ease, joy, and sheer playfulness in the role are irresistible” (The Scoop). Meanwhile, Axel Duffy shines as Marty McFly, with reviews praising his “sweet, endearing performance” and noting he “owns the show from the minute he walks onto the stage” (Daily Telegraph). The cast also includes Sydney’s Ashleigh Rubenach as Lorraine Baines, Javon King as Goldie Wilson and Marvin Berry, Thomas McGuane as Biff, and Ethan Jones as George McFly.
WAAPA graduate and seasoned stage performer, Ethan Jones has earned widespread critical acclaim for his standout portrayal of the man of the moment, George McFly, balancing physical comedy, awkward charm, and real heart. Known for his work in 9 to 5: The Musical, Chicago, and The Rocky Horror Show, Jones delivers a George that’s “heartfelt and humorous, creating a character arc that transforms from timid to daring and leaves the audience cheering” (Stage Whispers). Critics agree he is “a standout, with impeccable comedic timing that turns every awkward, sweet, or unexpected moment into pure gold” (Theatre Travels), and “crafts a loveable underdog audiences can’t help but root for” (Theatre Thoughts). Time Out sums it up perfectly: “You can’t help but love him.”
