Synchronise your watches for 10am this morning… Theatre-lovers, film buffs, DeLorean enthusiasts and time travelers alike are invited to come back in time with Marty McFly and Dr. Emmett Brown, with tickets on sale today for the Australian premiere season of BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical. The smash-hit production, winner of the Olivier Award for Best New Musical, will welcome audiences for the first time on Australian soil at the Sydney Lyric from Friday 26th September. Based on the Universal Pictures/Amblin Entertainment film, BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical has a book by Bob Gale, new music and lyrics by Emmy and Grammy Award-winning Alan Silvestri and six-time Grammy Award-winning Glen Ballard, with additional songs from the film including “The Power of Love” and “Johnny B. Goode”. Bob Gale is the co-creator and co-writer of the Back to the Future film trilogy alongside Robert Zemeckis, and Alan Silvestri composed the iconic film score for the series.

BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical is directed by Tony Award winner John Rando and features a multi-Tony and Olivier Award-winning design team that includes Tim Hatley (set and costume design), Tim Lutkin and Hugh Vanstone (lighting), Gareth Owen (sound) and Finn Ross (video), with choreography by Chris Bailey, musical supervision and arrangements by Nick Finlow, illusions by Chris Fisher, orchestrations by Ethan Popp and Bryan Crook, and dance arrangements by David Chase.

The musical is based on the first film which sees rock ‘n’ roll teenager Marty McFly accidentally transported back to 1955 in a time-travelling DeLorean invented by his friend, Dr. Emmett Brown. But before he can return to 1985, Marty must make sure his high school-aged parents fall in love in order to save his own existence. A dazzling production, with one point twenty-one gigawatts of electricity each and every performance, BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical promises thrilling stagecraft and a timeless story for audiences of all ages.

Casting for the Australian premiere season, including the highly coveted roles of Marty McFly and Doc, will be announced in coming months. 

BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical will be produced in Australia by John Frost for Crossroads Live Australia and Colin Ingram for Colin Ingram Ltd.

About Back to the Future films

The first Back to the Future movie was released in 1985, starring Michael J. Fox as “Marty McFly” and Christopher Lloyd as “Dr. Emmett Brown”. The film grossed USD $360.6 million at the box office worldwide and the total box office for all three films in the Back to the Future franchise was $936.6 million (over USD $1.8 billion in today’s money). This year marks 40 years since the first film premiered in 1985.

About BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical

The critically acclaimed production of BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical has been seen by nearly 3 million people worldwide to date. It broke Adelphi Theatre box office records when it opened, and the West End production has been recently extended to 27 July 2025. The production won the Best New Musical Olivier Award as well as multiple WhatsOnStage Awards and a Broadway World Award for Best New Musical. 

BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical had its world premiere at the Manchester Opera House on March 11, 2020 and officially opened in London’s West End on September 13, 2021. The Broadway production opened on Thursday, August 3, 2023, following a Gala Performance benefiting the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The Gala was attended by Michael J. Fox, Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Steven Spielberg, and Huey Lewis, among additional celebs from the original franchise. 

Now in its fourth year in London’s West End, BACK TO THE FUTURE: The Musical will open four productions in major markets in the next 18 months including Australia, Germany and Japan and recently announced an 8-year deal with Royal Caribbean to play the musical in its full physical form on Royal Caribbean’s Star of the Seas, the largest cruise ship in the world.                                                                

About the Creative Team:

Robert Zemeckis directed all three of the Back to the Future films, as well as Romancing the Stone, Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Forrest Gump, for which he won the Oscar for Best Director. Further directing credits include Cast Away, What Lies Beneath, The Polar Express, Flight and A Christmas Carol starring Jim Carrey.

Bob Gale co-wrote and co-produced the Back to the Future Trilogy with Robert Zemeckis, his long-standing collaborator. In addition to numerous other screenplays, he has also written comics, including issues of Batman and The Amazing Spider-Man.

Alan Silvestri first worked with Robert Zemeckis on the 1984 film Romancing the Stone. Since then, he has composed the music for all of Zemeckis’s films, including the Back to the Future Trilogy, Who Framed Roger Rabbit, Death Becomes Her, Forrest Gump, Cast Away and The Polar Express. He won two Grammy Awards for ‘Believe’ from The Polar Express and for Cast Away.

Six-time Grammy award-winner Glen Ballard has sold more than 150 million records worldwide and has worked with Aretha Franklin, Van Halen, Aerosmith and Katy Perry, to name a few. He co-wrote and produced Billboard magazine’s Best Album of the Decade (1990s), and the multi-platinum Jagged Little Pill for Alanis Morissette. He co-wrote the Grammy Award-winning ‘Believe’ with Alan Silvestri for The Polar Express, and his other songs for films include ‘Ordinary Miracle’ for Charlotte’s Web and ‘A Hero Comes Home’ for Beowulf. He co-wrote music and lyrics for Ghost – the Musical with Dave Stewart.
