Bowral Classic Rolls Into the Southern Highlands Next Weekend
The Southern Highlands will come alive on Sunday, 19 October as more than 2,500 riders from across Australia and overseas take part in the Bowral Classic cycling Gran Fondo.
Now in its ninth year, the Bowral Classic has established itself as one of the country’s premier road cycling events, attracting riders of varying abilities to experience the region’s breathtaking scenery and challenging courses.
Among the riders making the journey are the members of Sydney’s Pastries Cycling Club, a community of cycling enthusiasts united by their love of bikes and baked goods. Over 90 of their club members will be taking part in the Bowral Classic, kicking off their weekend with a Saturday training ride that finishes at the iconic Gumnut Patisserie, before lining up on the Sunday Start Line.
Anthony Nguyen from Pastries Cycling Club said, “The Bowral Classic is the highlight of our cycling calendar. It’s a chance for us to challenge ourselves on some beautiful roads, spend the weekend together as a club, and enjoy amazing Southern Highlands food and hospitality.”
The event will kick off from Bong Bong St, Bowral at 6:30am with riders passing through the quaint country towns of Berrima, Moss Vale, Bundanoon, Fitzroy Falls, Robertson and Glenquarry. The festivities will continue at the Event Village (Loseby Park, Bowral) between 10am and 4pm. All are welcome to enjoy the Event Village. There will be live music, gourmet food trucks, bars, cycling exhibitor stalls, and more.
To ensure the safety of all participants, several roads around the Southern Highlands will be temporarily closed on Sunday, 19 October. These closures will affect the following areas:
- Bowral CBD from 4:00am – 9:00am
- Oxleys Hill Rd, Bowral from 6:30am – 10:00am
- Oxley Drive, Bowral from 9:15am – 4:00pm
- Ellsmore Rd, Bundanoon from 7:30am – 11:00am
- Nowra Rd to Sheepwash Rd from 8:00am – 1:30pm
- Myra Vale Rd and Pearsons Ln from 8:15am – 2:00pm
- Tourist Rd from 8:45am - 3:15pm

Beyond the ride, the Bowral Classic has strong ties to the Southern Highlands community. Each year, close to 150 community members volunteer their time across the event, from managing rest stops to marshalling riders on course. In return, the event provides donations back to their local not-for-profit organisations, helping to support their invaluable work in the region.
Riders also have the option to fundraise for a charity of their choice and currently have raised over $23,000 for charities across Australia.
The Bowral Classic is proudly supported by the NSW Government through its tourism and major events agency, Destination NSW.
