Mark your calendar: Liverpool's biggest celebration of culture and community is coming to Austral
Something special is coming to South West Sydney. On Sunday 13 September, Scalabrini Austral throws open its doors for the inaugural Live Easy Community Market Day, a free, family-friendly celebration of the cultures, stories and people that make Liverpool one of Australia's most extraordinary communities. From 10am to 3pm, come for the food, the music and the market stalls. Stay for the feeling of belonging to something bigger.
This is more than a market day. It is a revival. Live Easy Community Market Day honours the spirit of the much-loved Italian Festival once held in Austral, paying tribute to the migrant families who helped shape this area while embracing the extraordinary diversity that defines Liverpool today, a region where residents from more than 140 countries call home and more than half the population speaks a language other than English. The event is proudly sponsored by Liverpool City Council, whose commitment to intercultural understanding and community engagement makes them the perfect partner for a day like this.
The food alone is worth the trip. Fish and chips, traditional Italian pasta, a coffee cart, gelato, gingerbread treats and Turkish gözleme will be on offer across the grounds, a delicious reflection of the community itself.
The market will come alive with stallholders offering Filipino handcrafts and jewellery, pre-loved treasures, fair trade goods, plants and soaps. Scalabrini Austral's own religious sisters and residents will run their own stalls, a reminder that this is a true community affair from the ground up.
For younger visitors, there is free rainbow face and henna hand painting, balloons and a kindy petting zoo. Families are also encouraged to bring a picnic blanket, settle into the open green grounds and let the day unfold at its own pace.
The day builds to a highlight: a Talent Show that puts Liverpool's cultural diversity front and centre, open to performers of all ages and backgrounds. Audiences can expect martial arts, dance from a women's health organisation, poetry, performances from a local Indian dance school and vibrant Filipino cultural dance from PASACI and SAFSI. If you have never seen Liverpool's talent on full display, this is the afternoon to change that.
