The National Visitor Survey and International Visitor Survey results have been released for June 2024
The National Visitor Survey (NVS) and International Visitor Survey (IVS) results have been released by Tourism Research Australia (TRA) for the Year Ended (YE) June 2024.
NVS and IVS results provide statistics on how Australian residents and international visitors travel in and to Australia. The data allows performance comparisons across states, regions and cities over time. NVS and IVS are a nationally consistent tourism industry statistical source which provides evidence for decision-makers of the value of tourism to state and regional economies.
Key Results
In YE June 2024, NSW received 101.6 million domestic and international visitors, who spent a record $52.9 billion in the state. Overnight visitors to NSW stayed 216.0 million nights. Total visitor numbers declined 3.6 per cent on YE June 2023, with domestic daytrip visitors falling 8.7 per cent to 60.8 million.
However, overnight visitation continued to grow with 37.1 million domestic overnight visitors (up 2.6 per cent) and 3.7 million international visitors (up 35.6 per cent). International visitors are up to 85 per cent of their pre-Covid level (YE June 2019).
The $52.9 billion total expenditure was up 9 per cent on YE June 2023 to the highest since records began in 1998. International visitors also spent a record of $12.2 billion (up 41.9 per cent). Domestic overnight visitors spent $30.7 billion (up 1.5 per cent), and daytrip visitors spent $10.0 billion (up 3.1 per cent).
NSW and Sydney continue to be Australia’s leading state and capital for tourism, receiving the highest number of visitors, visitor nights and expenditure.
• Domestic overnight visitors were 37.1 million, up 2.6 per cent. Expenditure was $30.7 billion, up 1.5 per cent. These visitors stayed 117.0 million nights, up 1.8 per cent.
• Domestic daytrip visitors were 60.8 million, down 8.7 per cent. Expenditure was $10.0 billion, up 3.1 per cent.
• International visitors were 3.7 million, up 35.6 per cent. Expenditure was $12.2 billion, up 41.9 per cent, with visitors staying 99.1 million nights, up 46.2 per cent.
