School holiday activities at the Australian Museum
Are you looking for fun things to do with the kids in Sydney during the school holidays? The Australian Museum (AM) offers a range of educational activities to keep your kids entertained.
The AM is open every day of the school holidays, with free general entry! Only a short walk from Museum and St James train stations, and new Gadigal Metro station, the AM is easy to get to, and there is paid parking nearby for a visit whether it's raining or a sunny day out.

Peruvian Metal Masters | Monday 14 April 2025
Inspire young minds with the artistry of ancient Peruvian artefacts in this metal embossing and wearable-art workshop.
These school holidays, learn from Peruvian metalsmith masters in this hands on creative kids workshop at the Australian Museum. Discover the art of metal embossing and have fun making gold and silver wearable art bound to impress.
Exclusive to this workshop, take a guided walk through the Gold Gallery, featured in the current exhibition Machu Picchu and the Golden Empires of Peru, to be inspired by ancient Peruvian golden artefacts and intricate metalwork designs. Then head back to the workshop where you will craft your very own statement piece using embossing techniques on thin metal sheets. Add the final touches with metallic materials and recycled supplies, and it will be yours to take home and wear for the rest of the holidays.
Scientist For a Day: Geologist | Tuesday 15 & Wednesday 16 April
Science ROCKS in this hands-on school holidays program filled with experiments and a behind-the-scenes tour of the collection lab where you'll meet experts in geology. The Scientist for a Day program is a full-day social and educational workshop for young minds, designed to show kids what it’s like to work in different areas of science such as geology!
Enjoy hands-on experiments to learn the science of how rocks are made, come behind-the-scenes to tour the Australian Museum Research Institute, plus explore the Minerals Exhibition. See where the real science happens in the AM's collections lab and have all your questions answered by experts in the field Ross Pogson, Collection Manager, Mineralogy & Petrology, and Dayna McGeeney, Technical Officer.
STEM Together: Sky High | Thursday 17 April 2025
STEM Together, our new family-friendly event, is back this autumn school holiday where both kids and adults dive into the exciting world of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Using the STEM disciplines, kids and their adult teammates complete a series of unique challenges relying on their curiosity, teamwork and creative problem-solving. Explore the mechanics of flight, see if you can reach the rainbow, and, most importantly work together to achieve HIGH-flying results!
Designed to inspire young and older minds alike, these shared interactive activities will generate a sense of accomplishment and grow connections through shared experiences. Plus, you’ll get to take home one of your creations to continue the fun and learning throughout the school holidays.
Scientist for a Day: Ornithologist | Wednesday 23 & Thursday 24 April
Back by popular demand these school holidays, kids are invited for a day of feathered fun and discovery to explore the fascinating world and wonders of ornithology. In an unmissable full-day experience, kids will go behind-the-scenes of the Australian Museum Research Institute’s specimen collection with Ornithology Technical Officer, Emily Cave.
As well as learning about bird anatomy and unique bird features, kids will conduct fun, hands-on experiments. They’ll enjoy a guided tour of the Birds of Australia exhibition, plus take a short walk across to Hyde Park with AM supervisors for an opportunity to watch and survey local birdlife.
