SYDNEY SUPER CUP LIGHTS UP HARBOUR CITY
Sydney Super Cup finished this evening at Allianz Stadium as Chelsea F.C. Women showed their class in a clinical 3-0 victory over a gallant A-League Women All-Stars.
Across the fortnight, 163,410 fans flocked to four blockbuster matchdays, open trainings and fan events across a spectacular period of world-class football featuring Chelsea F.C, Chelsea F.C Women, Tottenham Hotspur, Sydney FC, Western Sydney Wanderers and the A-League Women All-Stars.
Staged exclusively in Sydney across Accor Stadium and Allianz Stadium, the event brought two of the biggest clubs in world football to the Harbour City, headlined by the first-ever meeting between London rivals Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur outside the United Kingdom in the 117-year history of the fixture.
The football fever extended well beyond the matchdays with as Chelsea supporters packed into the Blues' Open Training for a first look at the squad under new manager Xabi Alonso, while Tottenham Hotspur's Open Training gave fans a rare close-up of Premier League stars ahead of the matches, with selfies and signatures aplenty.
Chelsea F.C Women trained under the lights at Allianz Stadium, giving fans an upclose look at some of the biggest names in the women's game, including Matildas star Ellie Carpenter, on the eve of the tournament finale.
Thousands of fans travelled from interstate and overseas to be part of the Sydney Super Cup, delivering a major boost to the NSW visitor economy.
Chelsea and Western Sydney Wanderers opened the tournament in style at Accor Stadium on Tuesday 28 July, serving up an extraordinary 10-goal thriller. The Wanderers led three times and matched the reigning FIFA Club World Cup champions blow for blow before a João Pedro hat-trick in the final 10 minutes sealed a 6-4 win for the Blues in one of the most entertaining exhibition matches ever played on Australian soil.
The following night, Sydney FC went toe-to-toe with Tottenham Hotspur at Allianz Stadium. Mathys Tel's stunning first-half free kick was cancelled out by Sky Blues’ new signing Takahiro Sekine, before Martin Dúbravka's heroics in the shootout saw Spurs edge a penalty decider after a 1-1 draw, with new signings Sandro Tonali and Andy Robertson making their first appearances in Tottenham colours.
Saturday night delivered the moment the football world had been waiting for. A soldout crowd of 80,363 packed Accor Stadium for a history-making London Derby, as Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur met outside the UK for the first time ever. In a fiery contest befitting the rivalry, Spurs came from behind to claim a 2-1 win and the men's bragging rights in the Harbour City.
Sydney Super Cup saved a fitting finale for last, with Chelsea F.C Women taking on the A-League Women All-Stars at Allianz Stadium tonight. Matildas superstar Ellie Carpenter lined up against the best of the A-Leagues, in the club's first-ever match on Australian soil. The most successful side in Women’s Super League history showed their attacking threat early as Sandy Baltimore rifled one in off the post before the versatile Sjoeke Nüsken slotted a half volley home in the first fifteen minutes.
The A-Leagues All Stars showed glimpses throughout the half, with Angie Beard nutmegging Lauren James and embarking on a run from her own half however the half would finish 2-0. The second half saw lots of changes from both sides, but it was the addition of Alexia Potter in the sixty-third minute that finished of the game as the nineteen-year-old fired one into the top right corner. 3-0 the final
score, the Blues flexing their international muscle in a fantastic affair.
