Wondrous Wombeyan Caves Reopen After Major Upgrades

Visitors can rediscover the ancient natural beauty of Wombeyan Caves, at Wombeyan Karst Conservation Reserve near Goulburn, with the visitor precinct reopening after significant upgrades by NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS).

As part of the site’s $9.6 million revitalisation, guests can now enjoy a new accessible viewing platform at the spectacular Victoria Arch near the Fig Tree Cave, visitor centre, kiosk and picnic area, upgrades to camping amenities including additional powered sites, and improved road access and parking.

Set within a secluded valley on the NSW Southern Tablelands, Wombeyan Karst Conservation Reserve is home to one of the state’s most remarkable cave systems, with ancient rock formations dating back more than 430 million years.

There are four main caves for visitors to explore, with guided tours available in WollondillyKooringa and Mulwaree caves, showcasing incredible cave decorations and fascinating stalactites, stalagmites and helictites. A family-friendly self-guided tour of the impressive Fig Tree Cave, featuring colourful chambers and unique cave coral, is also available.

To improve access for all visitors, a new wheelchair-friendly viewing platform has been constructed at the Victoria Arch near the Fig Tree Cave that can be reached along the accessible Victoria Arch walking track to allow people with limited mobility to enjoy the incredible cave formation.

Wombeyan Caves is an ideal weekend getaway destination, only a few hours' drive from Sydney, Wollongong and Canberra. There are cosy cabins and an array of camping options available, including tent, caravan and motorhome sites, allowing guests to discover the underground maze of caves by day and then enjoy the facilities at night.

The precinct is also a great day-trip destination with an abundance of native wildlife, a scenic walking track and many grassy picnic spots for visitors to enjoy.

Discounts are available to visitors to make the most of their cave experience including 2-cave and 3-cave passes, as well as a 10 percent saving on cave tours with all camping and accommodation bookings.

The Wombeyan Caves project has been funded through the NSW Government’s Regional Growth – Environment and Tourism Fund and will attract more visitors to the area to experience the unique natural landscape, as well as support the local visitor economy.
