From picnics in vineyards to balloon flights over the vines, here’s how to enjoy the Hunter Valley wine region of New South Wales, just a two-hour drive north of Sydney.

Indulge in a winery experience

The Hunter Valley is the oldest wine region in the country, so there are plenty of wineries steeped in history to encounter. With a 150-year-old vineyard in the foothills of the Brokenback Range, and 360-degree views of the surrounding countryside, Audrey Wilkinson offers cellar door tastings, a Picnic among the Vines experience, behind-the-scenes tours and a Fortified and Fromage Experience. There’s also a winemaking museum, and guest accommodation in three cottages.

The much-loved Tyrrell’s has been family-owned since 1858 and is home to some of Australia’s most awarded wines, including the iconic Vat 1 Semillon. Take a VIP Premium Tour and Tasting Experience for a guided winery and vineyard tour (calling in on the original family home, the Old Hut, dating back to 1858), a barrel tasting, and a tutored tasting of current-vintage and museum wines.

Over four generations and 125 years, Tulloch has been crafting wines and experiences that celebrate the good life of wine, food, family and friends. Tours include a tasting paired with local chocolates, a mystery tasting with local cheese and charcuterie, and a junior experience, which offers kids three soft drinks and matching snacks.

Not all Hunter wineries have been around since the 19th century: established in 1970, Brokenwood is one of Australia’s best-known premium wine labels. Key offerings include the famous Graveyard Vineyard Shiraz, ILR Reserve Semillon and the Cricket Pitch range. At the cellar door you’ll find a state-of-the-art tasting facility, museum, café and restaurant. Experiences include varietal wine and single vineyard tastings, while the Journey offers a guided food and wine flight in a private tasting room, a tour of the winery, and a pre-release wine tasting straight from the barrel.

A one-stop cellar door and restaurant, Wine House Hunter Valley offers a range of the best wines from the Hunter Valley. Experiences include the Hunter Discovery Tasting at the tasting bar and a Cocoa Nib Chocolate & Wine Tasting (including Cocoa Nib chocolate bonbons, made in the Hunter Valley). Book a table for lunch or enjoy the Grand Sensory Adventure, in which you’ll get a a glass of bubbly on arrival, then taste four super-premium wines with canapés.

Hunter Valley Private Tours has been showing visitors around the region for more than 20 years. Choose from vineyard tours, wine tastings and fun experiences including helicopter rides and go-karting. Wine enthusiasts will also appreciate Wine Country Tours, run by experienced oenologist Richard Everett. Tours can be tailored to suit your personal interests, and Richard hosts all the winery tastings himself.

For a fun foodie experience, look no further than Two Fat Blokes, which offers experiences and tours for small groups of up to 14 people, lasting anything from an hour to a full day. Choose from wine or beer tastings, and cheese, nougat and chocolate experiences.

The Hunter Valley caters for beer lovers too: Dave’s Tours offers not just winery tours but a Hop Hunter experience, showcasing three great craft breweries in the region. Or you can combine beer and wine on the Grain & Grapes tour.

Take off on an adventure

See the region from a different perspective by floating off with Balloon Aloft. You’ll rise above the beautiful Hunter Valley in a hot-air balloon at sunrise, followed by a champagne breakfast.

Or combine reds and whites with greens on a Hunter Valley golf tour. The Hunter is home to some of Australia’s best courses, including Cypress Lakes and The Vintage. You can sign up for a three-round, two-night package with Fairway Golf Tours.

If hot-air balloons or golf don’t strike your fancy, you can always stroll through 14 hectares of gardens at Hunter Valley Gardens. There are 6,000 trees, 600,000 shrubs and more than a million ground-cover plants, plus waterfalls, statues, murals and more.
