There’s nothing quite as satisfying as a well-crafted chocolate or a sweet treat for dessert. Across New South Wales, artisans hand-craft chocolate from premium, locally sourced ingredients, while purveyors of other sweets are ready to take you back in time via colourful lolly jars, ice-cream cones and cinnamon doughnuts. Here is a round-up of places to get your sweet fix.

Sydney and surrounds

One More Chocolate, Petersham

Portuguese tradition informs the small-batch confectionery delights crafted at the artisanal One More Chocolate in Petersham, in Sydney’s inner west, a 20-minute drive from the city centre. While the flavour combinations are excellent, from passionfruit chocolate-coated hazelnuts to dark chocolate, orange and almond bars, the signature hemispheres are something special. Pick up a box featuring Raspberry Coulis and Vanilla and Punchy Kalamansi flavours.

Josophan’s Fine Chocolates, Leura

You’ll find tempting creations at Josophan’s, in the charming Blue Mountains hub of Leura, a 90-minute drive west of Sydney. Stock up on melt-in-your-mouth individual fine chocolates with ganache fillings that feature fresh cream and no artificial preservatives. You can even take part in truffle-making workshops for a true insight into the art of chocolate making. If you’re looking for other treat-yourself experiences, pay fellow sweet connoisseurs The Candy Store in Leura a visit, or book high tea at the grand Hydro Majestic hotel, a 10-minute drive further along the Great Western Highway, past Katoomba.

The Lolly Bug, Little Hartley

Look out for the sunshine-yellow VW Beetle beside the wooden cottage at Little Hartley, as you drive along the Great Western Highway heading west from the Blue Mountains. Inside The Lolly Bug, you’ll find more than 2,000 different kinds of lollies from all over the world. Chew on Bazooka bubblegum, crack your teeth on some rock candy or grab a stash of Dutch liquorice. You’ll also find Australian-made fudge and rocky road.

Central NSW

Annie’s Old Fashioned Ice Cream Parlour, Bathurst

Step back into the 1950s at Annie’s Ice-cream Parlour in the heart of Bathurst, three hours west of Sydney. New flavours are always being developed, but you can’t miss the signature Sofala Gold (vanilla ice-cream studded with honeycomb nuggets) and Bridle Track (chocolate with Turkish delight and marshmallows). And if you’re not in the mood for ice-cream, hot dogs and waffles are also on offer.

Up north

Cocoa Nib, Pokolbin

In the Hunter Valley wine region, a two-hour drive north of Sydney, head to Cocoa Nib, on the grounds of the Keith Tulloch Wine estate in Pokolbin. Here you have a choice of almost-too-pretty-to-eat treats handmade in small batches using top-quality French couverture chocolate. The preservative-free chocolates are available in classic flavours such as coconut rough, as well as more creative combinations like guava yuzu and vanilla honey bourbon. After you’ve selected some artful bon bons, check out the Keith Tulloch cellar door visit and dine at the winery’s renowned restaurant Muse Kitchen

Duck Creek Macadamias, Newrybar

How do you enhance the creamy flavour of a macadamia? Dip it in chocolate! Duck Creek Macadamias has been harvesting nuts for more than 30 years in Newrybar. This chilled-out small town is in the Byron Bay hinterland, an eight-hour drive north of Sydney or a 25-minute drive from Byron Bay. Stop by the farm gate to sample and pick up chocolate-coated or honey-roasted macadamias, as well as macadamia and manuka honey.

Down south

Lolly Swagman, Berrima

Two hours down the Old Hume Highway from Sydney is the nostalgia-filled Lolly Swagman in Berrima, a town known for its Georgian village charm. All the lollies you loved as a kid, such as false teeth and chunky piglets, fill big glass jars lining the shelves. Load up on Mrs Swag’s freshly made fudge, as well as her traditional coconut ice, crafted from her grandmother’s 112-year-old recipe.

The Famous Berry Donut Van, Berry

For more than 50 years, Sydneysiders with a sweet tooth have been making the two-and-a-half-hour pilgrimage south to Berry for hot cinnamon doughnuts from The Famous Berry Donut Van. Each doughnut is cooked fresh and promises to be among the best you’ve ever tasted. The van is tucked in beside a service station on the town’s main road – you can’t miss the queue of eager customers.

Robyn Rowe Chocolates, Murrumbateman

In the Yass Valley town of Murrumbateman, three hours south of Sydney, you’ll find Robyn Rowe Chocolates – just look for the signs on Barwon Highway to find this hidden gem on Nanima Road. The finest Belgian Fair Trade chocolate is used to make 26 varieties of milk and dark chocolates, as well as hand-dipped truffles. Fillings feature local ingredients such as muscat from nearby winery Clonakilla, which is definitely worth a visit to purchase its acclaimed shiraz.

Junee Licorice & Chocolate Factory, Junee

Drive around two hours inland from Yass and you’ll find the pretty Riverina town of Junee. It’s best known for its railway museum, but the Junee Licorice and Chocolate Factory draws plenty of visitors too. Take a fascinating tour of the factory, which is housed in an 1930s-era flour mill, to see organic licorice being made. Then have a hearty lunch at The Millroom and stock up on sweet treats (and a selection of local savoury produce) for the drive home.
