The New South Wales Southern Highlands region is a favourite short break for Sydneysiders, thanks to its idyllic scenery, charming villages, delectable local produce and abundant outdoor activity, all just a 90-minute drive from the city centre. Here’s how to make the most of your time with unmissable things to do in Bowral and its surrounds.

One for the sports buffs

A must-see for cricket fans, the Bradman Museum & International Cricket Hall of Fame provides an interactive experience for the whole family. Located in cricket legend Sir Donald Bradman’s hometown of Bowral, the museum incorporates innovative displays with live game footage from around the world, touch screen kiosks, fascinating memorabilia and a contemporary art gallery. The gallery is set in the beautiful surrounds of Bradman Oval, with a café and gift store.

One for the adventure seekers

Wild Food Adventures offers a diverse range of tours from hiking and wildlife-spotting to fine dining and farm visits. These hands-on adventures connect people, place and produce, from walking through pristine wilderness, cycling vast forests, learning artisan crafts, swimming in waterfalls or tasting bush foods. There are a number of intriguing tours to choose from: its Canoes, Cool Climate Wines & Canapés adventure will take you through the scenic Kangaroo Valley, canoeing on majestic waterways with its ancient sunken forest, tasting native foods and award-winning wines, and dining on a decadent paddock-to-plate lunch.

One for the shoppers

Love vintage clothing and fossicking for antique treasures? Head to Dirty Janes in Bowral, the largest indoor market in the Southern Highlands. Within its huge warehouse space, more than 50 dealers showcase an extensive collection of furniture, ornaments, clothing, jewellery and collectables. Browse the collection before sitting down to scones, jam and cream coupled with your favourite tea at its in-house tea salon. Afterward explore the surrounding ‘Green Lane’ precinct, a leafy village square dotted with garden, homeware and gift shops.

One for the foodies

Those partial to fine foods can delve into the flavours of the Southern Highlands at the Robertson Cheese Factory in the small town of Robertson, a 25-minute drive from Bowral. Established in 1936, the factory continues to support the local dairy industry and has become a popular pit-stop for its café, dairy store and country-style emporium. Sample homemade “off the farm” cheeses, a wide variety of sweets and more than 100 flavours of ice cream, then explore its eclectic collection of vintage clothing, homewares, kitchenware and unique gifts.
