Whether you’re a complete beginner or an old hand at riding horses, there’s a mount to suit your abilities and a trail to match your skills in New South Wales. From cantering around a lush inner-city park in Sydney to plunging into the surf on horseback and riding across rolling hills on vast cattle ranches, here’s a round-up of the incredible equine adventures awaiting you on your next holiday.

Mount up in the heart of Sydney

Step into a pair of comfortable riding pants and head over to Sydney’s inner-city Centennial Parklands for a uniquely cosmopolitan equestrian experience. Each of Centennial Parklands Equestrian Centre’s three resident riding schools – Centennial Equestrian, Eastside Riding Academy and Papillon Riding Stables – offer casual visitors the chance to ride one of their mounts on the historic horse track looping around the 360-hectare parklands.

You’ll find plenty more horse-riding opportunities across the rural suburbs of Greater Sydney. Pick up tips and gain confidence in your abilities during an adult group riding lesson at Terrey Hills Riding School in the city’s north. This serene centre on the fringe of Ku-ring-gai Chase National Park also offers horsemanship lessons where you’ll learn the secrets of how horses behave and communicate.

In Western Sydney, SS Equine offers private riding lessons, guided trail riding and picnic rides from its base near Blacktown. A further 30-minute drive west, the passionate experts at Hawkesbury Valley Equestrian Centre impart their knowledge via helpful riding lessons and guided bush trail rides at the foothills of the Blue Mountains.

And in Sydney’s southwest, beginner and experienced riders can enjoy trail rides on Sydney Horse Riding’s 200-hectare property near Campbelltown. Upskill with the centre’s riding and horse-management lessons, and treat kids aged three-years-old and up to a pony ride.

Canter through wine country

You’ll find plenty of opportunities to indulge your passion for all things equestrian when you venture out of Sydney. You don’t even have to travel far out of town: the largest horse riding centre in Australia is less than an hour’s drive from the city. Choose your ride from 200-plus horses at Glenworth Valley Horse Riding on the Central Coast, then set out to immerse in the secluded valley’s untouched rainforest and native bushland.

Around a hour’s drive beyond Glenworth Valley, the Hunter Valley – the oldest wine region in Australia – is also a great place to explore on horseback. Take the little ones (or yourself) on a pony ride, or join a trail ride across an expansive private property with Hunter Valley Horse Riding & Adventures in Rothbury

Enjoy vineyard and bush trail rides, watch on with pride as kids as young as two years old amble off on their first pony ride, or spend the day touring local wineries in a horse-powered carriage with Hunter Valley Horses, which operates from Hunter Valley Resort and Farm in Pokolbin

Explore a cattle station spanning some 2,400 hectares of grazing land and rugged bush between Wollemi National Park and Yengo National Park with Chapman Valley Horse Riding. Sign up for a full-day riding session, or treat your kids to a 30-minute ride before settling in for the night in the property’s six-bedroom Drover’s Quarters. If you’re really keen, you can channel your inner cowboy or cowgirl on a three-day cattle muster: you’ll sleep well after spending a day in the saddle rounding up cows scattered across lush paddocks.

Take the time to explore the wider Hunter region and you’ll be rewarded with some spectacular countryside, including the ancient Gondwana rainforests of the Barrington Tops National Park. Pitch a tent, park your caravan or book bunkhouse beds at Camp Cobark near Gloucester, then saddle up for some unforgettable guided trail riding in the foothills of the Barrington Tops

Complete your equine odyssey by heading north to Tamworth, the country music capital of Australia, and setting off on an epic trail ride across a working cattle station with Tamworth and Kootingal Horse Riding Adventures.

Make a splash on the North Coast

Ever dreamed of riding a horse on a beach? Intermediate and advanced riders can do just that in Port Stephens, around a 2.5-hour drive north of Sydney, with Sahara Trails. You’ll hoof it along a beach facing the vast sand dunes of the Worimi Conservation Lands. If you’re not experienced enough to tackle the beach ride, you can always get your first taste of horse riding or enjoy a beginner-level bush trail ride through koala habitat.

Continuing north, enjoy a blissful escorted trail ride through the pretty vineyards of the acclaimed Cassegrain Wines estate and the surrounding bushland outside the beachside town of Port Macquarie with Port Macquarie Horse Riding Centre. Top off your visit by sampling French-influenced wines at Cassegrain’s cellar door or enjoying a meal at the winery’s well-regarded Taste restaurant.

Find more thrilling beach riding experiences at Coffs Harbour, where HWH Stables offers memorable rides into the surf at Boambee Beach, as well as riverside and bushland trail riding. You can also ride through coastal heath and along a secluded beach in Byron Bay’s Tyagarah Nature Reserve with your guide from Zephyr Horses.

Take the reins in Country NSW

Roam across Country NSW and you’ll encounter endless bucolic landscapes made for horse-riding. Heading west from Sydney, make your way across the Blue Mountains to Capertee Valley – the second-largest canyon in the country – and Turon Gates Mountain Retreat. Settle into one of Turon Gates’s log cabins, don a helmet and head out on a trail ride across this magnificent 2,400-hectare property. Or check into a cottage in the high country outside the Central Tablelands hub of Bathurst for a fascinating farm stay featuring equine experiences with High Country Trail Rides.

Catering to horse-obsessed kids, The Saddle Camp in the Southern Tablelands town of Braidwood offers overnight riding camps for girls as well as day rides for boy and girls (and grown-ups weighing up to 70 kilograms).

Saddle up on the South Coast

The endless sandy white beaches and coastal bushland of the NSW South Coast make for some great horse-riding. Just an hour’s drive south of Sydney, Otford Farm hosts magical rides through a rainforest and hilly terrain on the edge of the Royal National Park – you can also lead your child on a pony ride around the yard at the Stanwell Tops farm.

A further hour’s drive south in Shoalhaven Heads, breathe in crisp salty air as you explore the sandy trails, rainforest and blackbutt forest of Seven Mile Beach National Park and ride out onto the pristine Seven Mile Beach with Regal Riding School
