As the NRL and NRLW Grand Final return to Accor Stadium on Saturday 5 October, Sydney is gearing up for a weekend of high energy and big crowds. Whether you’re a die-hard fan travelling for the game or a visitor looking to soak up the long weekend atmosphere, there’s plenty to discover beyond the stadium. From vibrant precincts and multicultural eats to cultural experiences and scenic escapes, this is your guide to making the most of the October long weekend in and around Sydney.

Where to Explore

Sydney Olympic Park will be buzzing with footy fever, but just beyond the stadium gates lies a world of discovery. Parramatta, just a short drive or train ride away, is the beating heart of Western Sydney and a hub of history, culture and green space. Start your day with a walk through Parramatta Park, where heritage buildings meet riverside trails and picnic spots. It’s the perfect place to unwind before or after the match, with plenty of space to stretch out and enjoy the spring sunshine.

For those looking to add a cultural moment to their weekend, Riverside Theatre offers a packed program of live performances, from comedy and drama to music and dance. Or head into the city to catch Back to the Future: The Musical at Sydney Lyric Theatre - a high-octane production that’s been thrilling audiences with its nostalgic storyline, dazzling effects and infectious energy. It’s a great way to round out your weekend with a dose of entertainment that’s just as electrifying as the footy.

The Inner West is also worth exploring, especially for visitors keen to experience Sydney’s creative edge. Wander through Newtown’s vintage shops, street art and indie cafés, or head to Marrickville for craft breweries and live music. If you’re staying near the stadium, these precincts are easily accessible by train and offer a vibrant contrast to the game-day crowds.

Where to Eat

When it comes to food, Sydney is a feast of flavours. Around Accor Stadium, there’s no shortage of pre-game dining options. The Brewery Bar + Kitchen at Novotel Sydney Olympic Park is a reliable favourite, serving up burgers, schnitzels and cold beers in a relaxed setting. The Locker Room, just across the road, offers rooftop views, hearty pub fare and a buzzing atmosphere that builds as kick-off approaches. For something a little more refined, Bacar Restaurant and Bar at the Pullman Hotel delivers elevated dishes made with sustainable local ingredients.

If you’re arriving by train, consider hopping off a few stops early to explore the multicultural flavours of Sydney’s west. Burwood Chinatown is a must-visit, with more than 50 hawker-style eateries offering everything from handmade dumplings to sizzling stir-fries. A little further along the line, Strathfield and Lidcombe are home to some of the city’s best Korean food. Think savoury pancakes, bubbling hotpots and charcoal barbecue - perfect for sharing with mates before heading to the game.

Parramatta’s dining scene is equally impressive, offering everything from cheap eats to cult favourites. El Jannah in nearby Granville is legendary for its charcoal chicken and garlic sauce, while Pho Pasteur dishes up steaming bowls of Vietnamese pho that hit the spot after a long day. For Thai street food, Thai Riffic on Street is a local gem, and Romano’s Pizza & Pasta serves up generous portions of Italian comfort food that’s perfect for families or groups. Whether you’re after a quick bite or a sit-down meal, Parramatta delivers on flavour, value and variety.

Beyond the City

If you’re looking to stretch your legs and explore further afield, consider a day trip to Bowral in the Southern Highlands. Just 90 minutes from Sydney, Bowral is hosting the Horizontal Festival across the long weekend - a boutique celebration of NSW wine, food, music and art. Held at Centennial Vineyards, the festival features tastings, gourmet food trucks, live performances and immersive art installations. With day and evening sessions available, it’s a relaxed and scenic way to cap off your Grand Final getaway.

Whether you’re here for the footy, the food or the fun, Sydney is ready to welcome you with open arms. From stadium-side eats to cultural experiences and regional escapes, the October long weekend is your chance to discover a side of Sydney that’s full of flavour, energy and local pride. So grab your jersey, bring your appetite and get ready to explore.
