There’s nothing like a Sydney Christmas. As sun-soaked days melt into balmy, starry nights, the city transforms into a festive playground bursting with joy, culture, and unforgettable experiences. Whether you're singing carols, browsing artisan markets, or catching a glimpse of Santa on a jet ski, Sydney invites you to celebrate the season your way. 

Festive finds at Christmas markets 

Start your festive adventure at the The Rocks Christmas Markets starting from 10am every Friday, Saturday and Sunday from 5-21 December. Enjoy artisan gifts, local food, and festive vibes at The Rocks. After you've ticked each gift off your list, make sure you take some time to relax and recharge, with a picnic right under the Sydney Harbour Bridge.  

The fun doesn’t stop there, the Makers and Shakers market on 13–14 December at the White Bay Cruise Terminal, brings together over 140 stalls of Australian-made crafts, fashion, and food. They also have kids' activities, product tastings, and fun creative workshops, it’s a hands-on celebration of local talent. 

From 17–25 December, Christmas at the Cathedral brings the forecourt of St Mary’s Cathedral to life each night with food and gift stalls, live entertainment, and captivating roaming performers starting at 5:30pm till 10:30pm every night.

Iconic Sydney celebrations 

As you wander through the city, be sure to stop by Cockle Bay and Barangaroo Reserve to check out the floating Christmas Trees and snap the perfect festive photo. Take a stroll past the Native Living Christmas Trees that celebrate Australia's Indigenous culture and the beauty of native flora towering above Barangaroo Reserve from 15 November – 27 December. Or experience the enchanting allure of the Darling Harbour Christmas Tree, a stunning centrepiece located at Cockle Bay, from 21 November - 27 December.  

On 27 November, follow Santa’s sleigh from Circular Quay to Martin Place, accompanied by a 90-piece marching band and reindeer tricycles. At 8:30pm, the Lord Mayor will help light the 24m tree, followed by fireworks and a dazzling light show every 15 minutes until midnight. Activities across Customs House Square and Martin Place will kick off at 6:30pm.  

Don’t miss the Cockle Bay Christmas Spectacular on 6 December, featuring Santa on jet skis, flash mobs, marching bands, and a live DJ in a high-energy celebration. The grand finale will feature a stunning Christmas special fireworks display that lights up the sky over Cockle Bay.

Concerts, carols and symphonies 

Across the 6 and 7 December, the Homegrown Concert series celebrates the best of local Australian talent, set against the stunning backdrop of Sydney Harbour. Grab your picnic rug and gather your favourite people and head to Tallawoladah Lawn in The Rocks from 3.30 - 6.30pm. Whether you're winding down after a long lunch or gearing up for a night out, this is the perfect way to soak up the sunshine and soundtrack your summer. 
 

On Saturday, 6 December, the Sydney Youth Orchestra, under the baton of Stanley Dodds, will deliver a powerful performance of Gustav Mahler’s monumental Symphony No. 7, “Song of the Night” at 7:00 pm at the White Bay Power Station. Joining them is the SYO Philharmonic Orchestra, conducted by Stephen Williams, promising an evening of orchestral brilliance. 

Then on Sunday, 7 December, the Sydney Youth Orchestras' Philharmonic Orchestra Christmas Concert promises an evening of orchestral brilliance at the White Bay Power Station. Gather with family and friends for the heartwarming Christmas concert at 2.30pm, featuring beloved traditional carols and festive favourites.  

On 13 December, the Darling Harbour Christmas Festival at Tumbalong Park hosts a free live interactive concert with performances from Lenny Pearce, Christina and Zipporah Anu, Sydney Harmony, and more from 4:00 to 9:00pm. TikTok star Jayden Rodrigues will MC the night, with roving performers and a visit from Santa. 

On 20 December, join Australia’s most magical Christmas celebration, Carols in the Domain. From 1:00pm, enjoy food, carnival fun, and live performances. From the twinkling lights and sparkling fireworks to the soaring voices of Australia’s finest performers, this is your chance to soak up the one-of-a-kind atmosphere. Get ready to be swept up in festive cheer and sing along to classic carols under the Sydney stars. 
 
Whether you're shopping for handmade gifts, singing carols under the stars, or watching Santa light up the city, Sydney invites you to lean into the festive magic and celebrate your way.
