Circular Quay & the Northern CBD

Start your night around Circular Quay, The Rocks and the northern end of the CBD, where some of Sydney’s most polished cocktail bars sit alongside intimate late-night hideaways.

Maybe Sammy

Great for: Award-winning cocktails and vintage glamour
Step into one of the world’s best bars, where service is what you’d expect from a top-tier hotel bar meets elegance in a plush, retro lounge. Maybe Sammy’s mini cocktails are perfect for sampling, and the martini cart adds a touch of theatre. Don’t miss the lobster rolls for a late-night snack.

Bar 1880

Great for: Speakeasy vibes and pre-theatre drinks
Just off Bulletin Place, Bar 1880 is a two-level cocktail haven with laneway seating and a moody upstairs lounge. The drinks are the star here, but the share plates - think cured meats and sardines - make it a great spot to linger.

Vespertine

Great for: Live music, cocktails and sophisticated late nights
Hidden beneath 350 George Street with an entrance via Angel Place, Vespertine combines classic cocktails, a considered wine list and a late-night menu from Executive Chef Khanh Nguyen. Settle into the velvet banquettes for live musicians, bands and DJs, with everything from caviar and prawn toast to its signature fried chicken sandwich.

Grandfather’s

Great for: Late-night Chinese and cocktails
Serving supper until 1am, Grandfather’s focuses on the bold flavours of Guangdong and Sichuan. Think spring rolls, seafood, and a serious wine list - all in a stylish, welcoming space.

The Press

Great for: Live music and late-night martinis
Behind an unmarked door lies The Press, an opulent music bar. With a house band playing jazz, soul and disco, and DJs keeping the tempo high, it’s a glamorous spot for cocktails and dancing into the early hours.

For something just outside of the CBD, Enmore Road has become one of Sydney’s strongest after-dark strips, where serious cocktails come with a decidedly neighbourhood feel.

Silver’s Motel

Great for: Whisky, inventive cocktails and retro motel charm
Channeling the glamour of 1970s and ’80s Australian motels, Silver’s Motel pairs nostalgic interiors with seriously considered drinks. Co-founded by PS40’s Michael Chiem and Tynan Sidhu, the bar boasts an impressive collection of around 350 whiskies alongside inventive cocktails, including a dedicated line-up inspired by the Whisky Sour.

Super 44

Great for: Margaritas and pre or post-show drinks
The neighbourhood cantina riffs on old-world Spanish tavernas and Mexican drinking culture, pairing inventive, fruit-forward margaritas with tequila, cold lagers and spiced popcorn in a playful late-night setting

Deadwax

Great for: Vinyl, late-night tunes and retro vibes
A haven for music lovers, Deadwax pairs a 400-strong vinyl collection with plenty of ’70s nostalgia. Records spin from afternoon until late, alongside vinyl request nights and a private karaoke room. Fuel the evening with a Japanese-leaning snack menu featuring ramen and karaage before settling in for the soundtrack.

Bar Planet

Great for: Martinis with a psychedelic twist
Bar Planet takes the classic martini and sends it into another orbit. This psychedelic Enmore Road drinking den is playful, unconventional and proudly experimental, making it an essential stop for martini lovers and anyone drawn to the weird and wonderful side of Sydney nightlife.

Pleasure Club

Great for: Experimental cocktails and live entertainment
Hidden beneath Newtown, Pleasure Club is part cocktail bar, part late-night performance space. Created by Odd Culture Group, the subterranean venue pairs boundary-pushing drinks with an eclectic entertainment program spanning live music, theatre and performance art. Expect an immersive, unpredictable night where the drinks are every bit as creative as the performances.
