Enjoy a mind-blowing indigenous experience in New South Wales with local Aboriginal guides who share sacred knowledge about everything from cooking to cosmology. Combine an amazing educational break with an adventure such as quad biking or motorcycle riding, all in the company of the traditional owners of the land.

Sydney city

Travel Sydney’s Aboriginal Dreaming pathways with Dreamtime Southern X, an Aboriginal family-owned business, founded and managed by Dunghutti-Jerrinjha Elder Margret Campbell. Learn about the most ancient human culture on earth — its ecology, conservation, wildlife caring, sustainability, astrology and spiritual beliefs. Reconcile with Earth Mother (Myanga Malu) amid the magnificent Harbour City on a half-day tour on the Myanga Malu mini-coach.

North of Sydney

Blue Mountains

Enrich your life with ancient wisdom and develop a deep connection to country and culture on the Blue Mountains Walkabout Tour in the Blue Mountains, one hour’s drive northwest of Sydney. Experience for a day the creative, ceremonial and spiritual life led by the local Darug language group before contact in 1770. Learn by traditional methods and bushwalk along a Songline of sacred sites that leads partly through a beautiful moss-covered rainforest.

Central Coast

Take part in a Welcome to Country smoking ceremony with Darkinjung Cultural Tours on a Central Coast beach where Europeans landed in 1788. The half- and full-day tours visit various significant locations on Darkinjung lands (the Central Coast), 100km north of Sydney. You’ll visit Brisbane Water National Park, taking in Girrakool waterfall and sites that are only accessible with an Aboriginal tour guide.

Near Newcastle

Share in the Aboriginal hosts’ local culture and bush tucker, plus dig for fresh water, while enjoying exclusive quadbike access to the largest moving coastal sand dunes in the southern hemisphere. Book it in with Sand Dune Adventures at Williamtown near Newcastle, two hours’ drive north of Sydney.

Hunter Valley

See Aboriginal art in the Hunter Valley on the Wupa@Wanaruah Art Trail, which displays Aboriginal artworks in the region’s wineries and resorts, two hours’ drive from Sydney. Wupa means ‘to make’ or ‘to paint’ and the trail showcases both established and emerging Aboriginal artists.

Coffs Coast

Paddle with purpose on a Wajaana Yaam stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) expedition around Coffs Harbour, 530km north of Sydney. Explore the tranquil Solitary Islands Marine Park on a tour that helps pass down cultural knowledge, provides local employment and gives a proportion of its profits to Bularri Muurlay Nyanggan Aboriginal Corporation. Taste seasonal bush foods, swim, snorkel and listen to Gumbaynggirr stories. The tours run every morning, at locations that best align with the tides.

An hour’s drive south of Coffs Harbour, discover the culture and heritage of the Gaagal Wanggaan National Park with Unkya Cultural Eco Tours. Take a three-and-a-half-hour Gaagal Wanggaan (South Beach) walk through pristine bush and beach, or a shorter Gurruuja Yuludarla (Ocean Dreaming) tour that tells the story of how the waves were made as you explore Scotts Head, before enjoying a bush tucker lunch.

Country and Outback NSW

Broken Hill

Explore Mutawintji National Park, 130km northeast of Broken Hill, with Mutawintji Heritage Tours. Visit the restricted-access Mutawintji Historic Site with an Aboriginal guide and learn the environmental, kinship, historical and cultural values of the Wiimpatja people. Guests can visit gender-specific places — a powerful experience for women in particular.

Bathurst

Three hours’ drive northwest of Sydney, you can visit significant Aboriginal sites around Bathurst on the Wiradyuri Ngurambang 4WD Cultural Tour from Detour Adventures. You’ll tour highlights such as Wahluu (Mount Panorama), the Borenore limestone caves, the grave of law man Windradyne and the Maiyingu Marragu rock art site. An Aboriginal Elder often accompanies the tour, which was developed in collaboration with the Wiradjuri traditional owners.

Various regions

Enjoy the ride — and the non-riding elements — of tours with Ridelines Adventures. Aboriginal-owned and -operated Ridelines will ensure you learn about the culture and history of the indigenous communities you visit and make a real connection with the traditional custodians on whose lands you ride. Tours are sometimes scheduled to take in indigenous cultural festivals or visit Aboriginal-owned bush properties in areas such as Wollombi Valley on three- or four-day rides.

South of Sydney

Shoalhaven

Enjoy pop-up dinners in restaurants around the Shoalhaven area, three hours south of Sydney, with Aboriginal-owned catering company Mirritya Mundya, which means ‘hungry blackfish’ in the Ngarrugu language. Expect to see traditional dishes infused with native ingredients — the Mirritya Mundya ‘indigenous twist’. Delight in smoked meats and fish rubbed with pepperberry or lemon myrtle, homemade woodfired bush tomato bread and Davidson plum rocky road.

Eurobodalla

Immerse yourself in the world’s oldest living culture with Ngaran Ngaran Culture Awareness in Yuin country (the Narooma region, 350km south of Sydney). Take a guided journey through Gulaga (Mount Dromedary) and Djirringanj Country.
