The charming town of Mudgee, a 3.5-hour drive from Sydney, has all you need for the ultimate country escape. Along with heritage streetscapes, great eateries, beautiful scenery and plenty to see and do, there are over 40 cellar doors to visit. Winemaking here dates back to the 1850s, with the region’s temperate climate ideal for producing robust varietals.

Where to fuel up

Start your day with good coffee and a bite to eat at local favourite Alby & Esthers. Set in a cobblestoned laneway near the Mudgee Clock Tower, the circa-1873 stone terrace is always buzzing with activity and the mouth-watering menu highlights regional ingredients.

The Coffee House at Parkview is set within the leafy gardens of the Parkview Hotel, which was constructed in the early 1870s and is beautifully preserved for all to enjoy. Great service tops off the great coffee, seasonal menu and fabulous location.

Where to wine and dine

Fifteen minutes from town, Lowe Family Wine Co. is an organic and biodynamic winery and farm specialising in small-batch wines. It’s known for its Zinfandel varietal; the winery’s Zin House is a modern farmhouse restaurant that provides sweeping views of the property and uses farm fresh produce for seasonal dishes.

Also 15 minutes out of town, Robert Stein Winery & Vineyard invites you to sample its world-famous riesling and dine at Pipeclay Pumphouse Restaurant, where chef and owner Andy Crestani’s inventive dishes reflect the passion and quality of local producers. Motorbike lovers will appreciate the vintage collection here.

For a relaxed wining and dining experience, stop by boutique winery Burnbrae Wines and match a picnic lunch with a fine glass of rosé — it’s 15 minutes from Mudgee on Hill End Road. Located in the valley of the Apple Tree Flat, Logan Wines has a modern tasting room with stunning views of the Great Dividing Range. If beer is more to your taste, head for Mudgee Brewing Co to enjoy refreshing craft beers.

Where to play

For a relaxing retail experience, head to the town centre. Pick up everything from local treasures to designer wares at Whatever MudgeeEdited and Co. and Cherry Red. At Mudgee Honey Haven you’ll find local honeys, mead and preserves — you can even play a round of putt putt golf here.

Make your Mudgee visit even more unforgettable with a hot-air balloon flight over the vineyards, courtesy of Balloon Aloft. For a serene experience on the water, head to nearby Wollemi National Park and enjoy a paddle on Ganguddy-Dunns Swamp with a guide from Southern Cross Kayaking.

Or take a day trip to Ferntree Gully Reserve, a 50-minute drive from Mudgee. This stunning rainforest features a one-hour loop walk ideal for nature lovers. The township of Rylstone is 17km away — drop into Rylstone Olive Press to sample award-winning olive oil and enjoy lunch at 29 Nine 99, which serves up authentic yum cha and delicious dumplings in a sunny courtyard.

End your day with a visit to Mudgee Observatory, located just outside of town, where you can take in the region’s stellar night skies.

Where to stay

Mudgee has many unique offerings when it comes to resting your head. Perry Street Hotel, housed in a historic turn-of-the-century building, offers beautifully appointed self-contained apartments in the centre of town. The Tannery, a beautifully renovated cottage, also combines history with modern-day luxury and sleeps two couples.

For travellers seeking solitude, glamping among the rolling hills at Sierra Escape is a treat — the eco glamping tents are designed for comfort, with wood fireplaces and outdoor bathtubs. If you’re travelling with family or friends, book the five-bedroom Blue Wren Farmhouse for a classic country retreat, or Evanslea, which offers a range of luxury accommodation and boasts an outdoor swimming pool.
