Yuin Retreat, South Coast

For an on-Country adventure on the NSW South Coast, it doesn’t get much more immersive than the  two-night Yuin Retreat run by Aboriginal-owned and operated tour company Ngaran Ngaran Culture Awareness. Throughout this adventure you’ll explore important sites around Central Tilba, Narooma and beyond, including the spectacular Gulaga Mountain (Mount Dromedary) — an extinct volcano revered by the Yuin people as the place of their ancestral origin. You’ll also learn about the Djirringanj Dreaming trail, experience a traditional smoking ceremony and sit in a yarning circle to hear  ancient stories. When you’re ready to get hands on, there’s also healing workshops, dance and didgeridoo demonstrations, and you’ll dine on Indigenous Twist food throughout the tour.

Byadbo Wilderness Expedition, Snowy Mountains

Embark on a wilderness paddling adventure with a difference on a tour with Alpine River Adventures. Starting near the small village of Delegate in the NSW Snowy Mountains, the Byadbo Wilderness Expedition (which runs from August to December) will see you paddle and camp along spectacular alpine river systems for five or six days with an Aboriginal guide. Along the way, you’ll visit significant cultural sites, spot wildlife including platypus and kangaroos, relax on untouched river beaches, and learn Aboriginal stories connected to the unspoiled landscape. The trip, which ends in Kosciuszko National Park, is suitable for children 12 and up, with no experience necessary — paddle skills training is built into the tour.

Cultural Immersion Camp, Hunter Valley

Bring your own tent or swag and join Leanne King, owner of Wollombi Aboriginal Cultural Experiences, on an unforgettable two-night immersion camp at Ngurrumpa, a bush property close to Yengo National Park in the lower Hunter Valley. While staying at  the basic wilderness camp, Leanne — a proud Dhurug woman and Aboriginal scholar — will lead activities ranging from cultural site visits to traditional dance workshops, Aboriginal astronomy to bush tucker walks, leaving you with a deeper connection to this wild and beautiful corner of New South Wales. All tours depart and return to Wollombi Cultural Centre in historic Wollombi, a two-hour drive from Sydney.
