New South Wales is full of enchanting places to pop the question. From snow-capped mountains to whimsical castles and rolling vineyards, here are 14 memorable spots to propose to your loved one.

Picnic proposal

Ramp up the romance factor with a picnic among the vines in the beautiful Hunter Valley, two hours north of Sydney. Pick up cheese platter ingredients from the Hunter Valley Smelly Cheese Shop, sweets from the Hunter Valley Chocolate Company and wine from one of the region’s many cellar doors. Set up in a scenic haven such as the grounds of Pokolbin Community Hall, Wollombi Wines or Audrey Wilkinson Winery, and the rest is up to you.

At Two Figs Winery, near Berry on the South Coast, you can sample award-winning boutique wines and put together a picnic hamper with delectable goods from the deli fridge. Two Figs is perched atop one of Mount Coolangatta’s foothills, with breathtaking views along the Shoalhaven River setting the scene for a memorable proposal.

Enjoy Australia’s first mainland sunrise with an intimate picnic beside Byron Bay’s iconic lighthouse in northern NSW – it’s the easternmost point on mainland Australia. Toast The Sun’s picnic experience includes a gourmet picnic hamper, stylish picnic setting and the option to personalise. Book between May and November for the chance to put a ring on it while watching whales migrate past this North Coast town.

Country love

Along the drive from Greenethorpe to Young in the the South West Slopes region of country NSW, a fairytale castle rises up from the rural landscape. Heritage-listed Iandra Castle, which is more than a century old, sits grandly amid rolling green lawns, rose gardens and established trees. The owners offer several open days throughout the year, or you can get in touch with special requests.

Located 25km south of Tamworth in northeast NSW, Goonoo Goonoo Station houses a beautifully restored 19th-century village with landscaped gardens, unique accommodation and an award-winning restaurant as well as a chapel and event space – an ideal setting for rural romance. Enjoy a lavish lunch of seasonal produce at the Glasshouse Restaurant, propose in the stunning grounds, then stay over in the Shearer’s Quarters.

At the luxurious Kimo Estate, a 2,833-hectare working sheep and cattle farm outside Gundagai in the Riverina region of southwest NSW, each of three stylish, off-grid ‘eco huts’ come equipped with a proposal-ready private outdoor hot tub — just don’t drop the ring!

Weekend escape

Paperbark Camp in Jervis Bay on the South Coast has a collection of safari-style glamping tents nestled in coastal bushland. Order a gourmet picnic hamper, take a complimentary canoe out on the river and propose to your partner in the serene natural setting. Top it off with a candlelit dinner at award-winning onsite restaurant The Gunyah.

From its luxurious cottages to its picturesque lake, verdant vineyards and country restaurant with a crackling fire, the romantic Bendooley Estate in the Southern Highlands, southwest of Sydney, offers a smorgasbord of proposal-perfect settings.

Tucked away in the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, Love Cabins are exclusively for couples and offer self-contained accommodation in utterly unique structures including a ‘Love Tee Pee’ and an ‘Enchanted Cave’ with a spa bath overlooking the natural wilderness.

Sail off into the sunset with your beau with the help of Taylor Made Escapes, which offers private skippered yacht charters at Sydney’s iconic Palm Beach. Choose an overnight option and pop the question over a glass of bubbly as the sun sinks behind Pittwater.

Adventure together

Once the snow melts, you can propose on Australia’s highest peak, Mt Kosciuszko (2,228m). The Mount Kosciuszko Summit Walk is a moderate grade, six- to eight-hour return trip from Charlotte Pass and four to five hours from Thredbo, with spectacular views along the way. Start with a ride on Thredbo’s Summer Scenic Chairlift, which takes you to the Eagle’s Nest, Australia’s highest restaurant.

Ride through lush rainforest on Mt Moollootoo, two hours south of Sydney, with Kangaroo Valley Horse Riding. From the peak of Moollootoo there are panoramic views of Morton National park, Lake Yurunga and the Kangaroo River — a spectacular backdrop for your big moment. It’s suitable for all horse riders of all experience levels.

Propose under the sea without getting wet at Sea Life Sydney Aquarium, where you can dine with your loved one in the ‘heart’ of a coral reef. The Aquarium Private Dining Experience held in the Day and Night on the Reef zone includes a self-guided after-hours aquarium tour and a three-course dinner and drinks served in an intimate private dining space with floor-to-ceiling windows to the reef.

Propose during an exclusive hot air balloon ride with Cloud9 Balloons, floating together over the lush Hawkesbury region, northwest of Sydney. For a faster pace, enjoy a private helicopter ride with Aero Logistics Helicopters over the Hunter Valley, with extras such as cellar door tastings and an intimate lunch also available. Ask the team to drop you off in a stunning location for your proposal.
