On the far North Coast of New South Wales, The Tweed is blessed with fertile farmland and seafood-rich waters, the fruits of which are showcased in the area’s excellent restaurants. From old favourites to newer arrivals, here are five top tables for a memorable meal. Just remember to book early to avoid missing out on a Tweed holiday highlight.

Pipit

In the Tweed coastal town of Pottsville, a 20-minute drive from Byron Bay, Pipit chef Ben Devlin creates inventive menus that are adjusted to reflect seasonal harvesting times and to ensure local ingredients are used when they’re best available. Devlin’s résumé includes a stint at iconic Copenhagen restaurant Noma, and with a kitchen designed around a central charcoal pit, you can expect the bold flavours that come from cooking with fire. And, when it comes to pairing wine, sommelier Aaron Wigg has you covered with a list of minimal-intervention wines from around Australia.

Potager

Head into the Tweed hinterland to Potager, the homely restaurant anchoring a four-hectare farm in Carool, a 30-minute drive from Tweed Heads. Open Friday to Sunday, Potager not only grows and sources its organic produce locally, its timber tables and pretty plates are made by local artisans too. Take in the valley views from the deck as you tuck into the likes of local Australian bay lobster with smoked garlic butter, and fair game wild venison carpaccio. And don’t make any plans to rush off afterwards — sit, savour and embrace the long lunch experience.

Fins

Fins turned 30 in 2021, and in that time head chef Steven Snow has had a lot to celebrate, with more than 25 consecutive years of ‘hats’ (Good Food Guide chef’s hats, Australia’s version of Michelin stars) among the restaurant’s long list of awards. Located in Kingscliff, 25 minutes’ drive north of Pottsville, Fins has showcased sustainable seafood long before it was trendy. Order à la carte or treat yourself to a seafood degustation paired with local and international wines. You can also enjoy a quick taste of Fins by popping by for the Oyster Bar happy hour from 4pm to 6pm Wednesdays to Saturdays.

Paper Daisy

Between Pottsville and Kingscliff, Cabarita Beach’s luxe boutique hotel Halcyon House is home to Paper Daisy, where the décor is as delicious as the food. When Ben Devlin left this award-winning restaurant to open Pipit in 2019, Jason Barratt of Byron Bay’s Raes Dining Room stepped into the role of Paper Daisy’s executive chef. Barratt’s menu continues the focus on local produce and sustainable seafood, and if you’re a hotel guest, you can enjoy Paper Daisy dishes in bed with a room-service menu that includes a wagyu burger to remember.

Mavis’s Kitchen

On a former dairy farm in the Tweed hinterland near the village of Uki, Mavis’s Kitchen is a relaxed, country-style restaurant set in a beautiful Queenslander-style building. Much of the organic, seasonal produce featured in its hearty dishes is grown on the farm. If you decide to spend the night in one of the property’s cabins, you’re welcome to help yourself to some organic fruit, herbs or salad leaves growing in the garden.
