From spectacular French toast after a harbourside swim to smoked salmon fritters by a Northern Beaches jetty, Sydney delivers when it comes to brunch offerings by the water.

The Boathouse

The first Boathouse café opened in late 2008 on Palm Beach. The stylish décor and waterfront brunch setting led to demand for more sundazed outposts: there are Boathouse venues in Shelly BeachBalmoral Beach and, in 2021, Rose Bay. Each coastal location has its individual charms, but the menu at each venue is consistently strong and friendly to gluten-free diets. Live large with smoked salmon fritters with caviar and crème fraîche, savour the comforting combination of mushrooms, poached eggs and potato rosti, or sample the season’s produce at its peak, with a market fruit plate that’s sweetened with honey and served with yoghurt.

The Pantry Manly

The Pantry Manly is located by the sandy edge of the beach, which means your brunch comes with uninterrupted seaside views. The breakfast menu is just as impressive, and suits the coastal setting. There are warm buttermilk pancakes with fresh berries and vanilla ice-cream, and grazing boards topped with San Daniele prosciutto, chorizo and truffled salami (or various olives, cheese and grilled asparagus for vegetarians). You can also turn to familiar staples (smashed avocado, poached eggs on toast, eggs and soldiers) or lean into the summer holiday atmosphere and order a mimosa, prosecco or Aperol spritz with brunch.

The Flying Bear

The Flying Bear cafe is an under-the-radar brunch destination. It’s located within the complex for the Sydney Flying Squadron, which was formed in 1891 by businessman Mark Foy, and is now the city’s oldest open boat sailing club. So the café sits away from the street, on a Kirribilli wharf, and boasts a stunning vantage point of the cove. Not surprisingly, it’s a favourite among locals and is an insider secret. This eatery is run by the Bird & Bear people, who have nailed the casual waterside dining brief with their other venues (The Sandy Bear by Clontarf Marina, Archie Bear by Mosman Rowers Club). So the menu here is relaxed and appealing: think beer-battered fish and chips, chia pudding with seasonal fruit, and maple-baked granola with blue spirulina yoghurt.
