Stretching from South Durras down to Tilba Tilba on the far South Coast of New South Wales, a four-hour drive south of Sydney, the Eurobodalla region is a natural treasure. Here you’ll find a spectacular coastline with more than 80 beaches, plentiful wildlife, nature reserves, lush hinterland and delicious local produce. Add these highlights to your itinerary for a memorable visit.

Where to eat and drink

From fresh oysters to gourmet cheeses, Eurobodalla’s local produce is legendary. Don’t miss the SAGE Farmers Market held in Moruya’s Eastside Park every Tuesday afternoon, where you can meet local producers while you fill your shopping basket.

Eurobodalla is part of Australia’s Oyster Coast, and you’ll find these plump delicacies on menus across the region, with just a few fun places to try oysters including the Oyster Shed on Wray Street and the Pearly Oyster Bar in Batemans Bay. Typically held in May, the Narooma Oyster Festival is a vibrant community celebration with live music, fresh local produce and some of the world’s best oysters.

Eurobodalla is also one of the oldest dairying regions in NSW and has been producing quality cheeses since the 1870s. At the 1950s-style Bodalla Dairy Shed in Bodalla, fresh milk comes from the dairy every morning to make rustic cheeses with native-ingredient flavours, as well as traditional milkshakes, great coffees, yoghurt and ice creams. Further south, sample more delicious cheeses and perhaps join a cheesemaking course at the ABC Cheese Factory in the National Heritage-listed Central Tilba, which offers a living snapshot of 19th-century regional Australia.

The region also has a vibrant café scene, with a few favourites including The Mossy Cafe at Mossy Point; Moruya’s Alfresco Coffee Roasters, which opened a second café in Batemans Bay in 2020; and La Galette in Tilba Tilba, where the coffee pairs beautifully with the delicate French pastries on offer.

For a special meal, make a reservation at The River Restaurant in Moruya, where chef Peter Compton works magic with fresh regional produce. And when it comes to atmospheric pubs, it’s difficult to beat the historic Dromedary Hotel in Central Tilba, into which owners Susan Gray and Jeremy Corfield have breathed new life since taking the reins in 2018. Just up the road, Tilba Valley Winery and Ale House is another great place to try a local tipple.

What to see and do

From Narooma it’s a short boat trip out to Montague Island, where you can tour its historic lighthouse, visit significant Aboriginal cultural sites, snorkel with seals, and watch whales and marvel at little penguins depending on the season. Montague Island Adventures is just one of several local operators that can take you to the island, arrange a fishing charter, or both.

Green thumbs should pay a visit to the enchanting Foxglove and Co. Garden in Tilba Tilba, with its meandering paths arched with greenery, ponds and cascading flowers. Tilba Tilba is also the gateway to Gulaga National Park. The Gulaga (Mount Dromedary) summit trail can be hiked in half a day, but for a deeper experience, sign up for the 40-hour Yuin Retreat with Aboriginal-owned and operated tour company Ngaran Ngaran Culture Awareness, which includes an interpretative ascent of the culturally significant mountain.

Other national parks to explore include seaside Eurobodalla National Park, where you can hike the 13.5km Bingi Dreaming Track (look out for kangaroos!), and Deua National Park in the mountains, where you can camp, hike, swim, and spot wildlife. There are also 83 beaches to hop between on the Eurobodalla coast, many of which feature unique rock formations such as Narooma’s photogenic Glasshouse Rocks

Where to stay

For a farm stay with an ocean view, try Oakleigh Farm Cottages, nestled beside Eurobodalla National Park on a lush farm at Mystery Bay. Each cottage is unique with its own yard and you’ll look out over paddocks dotted with sheep, horses and chickens. For a romantic recharge, Bower at Broulee is a collection of self-contained one- and two-bedroom cabins nestled in 40 hectares of regenerating bushland. Rebuilt in 2020, the property’s self-contained Spa Bowers have private barbecue decks and spa baths. Mobile day spa services are available and bookings include a breakfast hamper.

In Central Tilba, Tilba Lake Camp has four tiny homes and a stylish bell tent nestled in coastal paddocks with views of the lake, ocean and mountains. The cute pods are ideal for couples and have queen beds layered with soft linens, kitchen, outdoor private fire pit and access to a swimming pool. Another atmospheric glamping option in the region, Mountain View Farm has three stylish safari tents on a pretty property in Tilba Tilba

For something different, you can also opt to stay overnight on Montague Island in one of the island’s two beautifully restored Lighthouse Keeper’s Cottages
