Sydney is the perfect place to indulge in a little self-care, where you can reconnect with yourself, your surroundings and your community. With its rejuvenating coastline, a wide variety of wellness innovators and health-focused eateries, the city offers a diversity of wellness experiences helping you find exactly what you need.

Transform yourself before breakfast

Sydney wakes up early and Bondi, one of the city’s most picturesque wellness hubs, is one of the best examples. Modern wellness centre Nimbus Co opens their infrared sauna and ice baths from 6am or join the eclectic crowd at the historic Bondi Iceberg’s ocean pool and sauna for a steam bath with one of the best views in Sydney.

Nurture yourself with a wholesome breakfast at one of Bondi’s best cafes offering health-focused options with the quality of produce you’d expect at Sydney’s best restaurants. Drop into Harrys Bondi for sweet potato, hummus and tabbouleh nourish bowls just off Bondi Beach; try a red rice, quinoa and beetroot hummus rainbow bowl on a sun-drenched table at The Depot; or visit celebrity chef Bill Granger’s iconic cafe Bills for plenty of nourishing vegetarian options including his famed corn fritters and a duo of textural salads.

Wander along Surry Hills’s Crown Street to discover beautiful boutiques and local lifestyle retailers such as Elms Store, which showcases locally made wellness products, from preservative-free sunscreens to moisturisers infused with native ingredients. Pamper your skin with naturopathic potions and oils at Luna Beauty & Apothecary or book in for a comprehensive naturopathic review. If your wellness journey includes crafting, join a candle making or weaving workshop at Provider Store.

Clear your mind or dip into your subconscious at Sydney Float Centre nearby in Darlinghurst, where float pods help you experience total serenity in a sound, light and seemingly gravity-free space. Or find weightlessness in a more demanding environment by working out your body and mind in a Sky-Lab aerial yoga class.

Refuel with a satisfying lunch

Nourish your body with an innovative plant-based set menu at Yellow, in Potts Point, the only vegan restaurant to be awarded two hats in the Good Food Guide. Loam, within the stylish Ace Hotel in Surry Hills, has options for simple green bowls but also more indulgent, saucy grilled meats – all based on premium Australian produce. For something carrying more nostalgia or comfort, try a dhal at the vegetarian Indian street food diner in Redfern, Flyover Fritterie.

If you’re looking for something light and fast, order a warm salad bowl at the leafy courtyard at Daily Greens in Paddington or nab a raw-food snack, an organic juice and a herbal tonic from Orchard Street Elixir Bar on Glenmore Road, a Paddington shopping street famous for its designer fashion boutiques.

Treat yourself to some ‘me time’

Sydney is dotted with hotels, spas and wellness centres designed to give restorative and unique experiences suited to any traveller. In the city centre, wash away your everyday concerns with an indulgent afternoon at The Day Spa by Chuan at The Langham. Dip in the Langham’s 20-metre heated indoor swimming pool, then recharge with a one-hour, full-body massage that will leave every inch of your skin feeling moisturised and relaxed. You can tailor your own wellness experience at the designer luxury hotel Capella Sydney. Their Auriga Spa offers a wellness menu with everything from a volcanic mud wrap to a 90-minute light therapy facial.

Pack an entire day of wellness treatments into a rejuvenating six-hour Metamorphosis treatment at SpaQ within the QT Sydney, or settle in for an overnight experience with Sofitel Sydney Darling Harbour’s Urban Wellness Escape package, which includes a stay in a luxe suite (complete with a Peloton bike), three-hour in-suite spa treatments for two, wellness dinners, private sunrise yoga and more. Just over the bridge near Barangaroo, you can have couples treatments at The Darling in Pyrmont. Relax into a Dihlbi facial, which uses native botanicals by Australian brand Li’Tya, to leave your skin looking its best.

Chi, The Spa at the Shangri-La Hotel in The Rocks, is inspired by thousands of years of Eastern philosophy and wellness practice. Dip into infinity spas and book in for a treatment that incorporates locally made, high-end beauty and health products, like lauded Australian brand Sodashi.

If relaxing in a bathhouse is more your style, Capybara in Surry Hills is a modern and design-focused offering with a mineral spa, ice bath, sauna, steam room and hammam.

Nourish yourself with NSW’s best produce

Sample NSW’s best produce at award-winning restaurants like farm-to-table eatery Fred’s, on Paddington’s Oxford Street, or at Middle Eastern fine diner Aalia, which combines ancient Levantine recipes with premium, local ingredients. Taste sustainable takes on Australian seafood at the low-waste Chippendale fine diner Longshore or beachside restaurant North Bondi Fish.

For the best plant-based dining, drop into Marrickville vegetarian diner Two Chaps on a Friday or Saturday night for an Italian feast, share a few vegan pizzas at the Neapolitan-style Gigi’s Pizzeria in Newtown or make your way through the spicy, sweat-inducing vegetable side of the menu at Lankan Filling Station, a Darlinghurst Sri Lankan eatery run by former fine-dining chef O Tama Carey.
