A 2.5-hour drive north of Sydney, Port Stephens is a haven for whale watching. The coastline here is dominated by the 98,000-hectare Port Stephens and Great Lakes Marine Park, the largest of its kind in the state and a wonderous watery playground for everything from dolphins and turtles to humpback whales during their annual migration (May through November).

Every year, more than 25,000 whales make their way along the ‘Humpback Highway’, a route from Antarctica to the Pacific that runs along the coast of New South Wales. Port Stephens is the perfect spot to watch this spectacular show unfold, from clifftop lookouts, beaches and cruises, with the creatures regularly coming within three kilometres of the coast.

From parks and lookouts

Scenic walks, fields of wildflowers and large numbers of koalas are all draws of Tomaree National Park, a superb backdrop to the villages of Nelson BayShoal BayFingal Bay and Boat Harbour. During migration you can spot humpback and southern right whales here from secluded beaches and cliff tops – lace up your shoes for the 2km Tomaree Head Summit walk to soak up unparalleled views over the ocean, across bays and the Stockton Sand Dunes and all the way to Cabbage Tree and Boondelbah islands.

More panoramic vistas await at the Barry Park whale watching platform, on the headland at the southern end of beautiful Fingal Bay Beach. Bring a picnic lunch and your binoculars, and find a shady perch to linger.

On Birubi Beach

Dolphins are a year-round sight in the waters off Birubi Beach, located at Anna Bay and the northern most section of the Golden Bight – a huge expanse of beach that stretches from Stockton (near Newcastle) to Port Stephens. They’re joined by whales during the season. Local tip: Grab a coffee from the Crest Birubi Beach café, head out onto the patio and soak up the sun while waiting for wildlife to surface.

On a whale-watching boat

As moving as it is to see whales breaching and blowing from the shoreline, it’s hard to beat getting up close and personal with these enormous marine mammals on a whale watching cruise. Most operators whisk visitors out to sea from Nelson Bay marina. Moonshadow-TQC Cruises has been doing just that for decades, the company’s captains well versed in the waters whales steam along. In addition to humpbacks and southern rights, you’ll also likely spot dolphins plying in your boat’s wake.

Or on a catamaran

Imagine Cruises’ 16-metre-long catamaran is so quiet that you’ll be able to hear whales breathe when you’re cruising the waters of the Port Stephens and Great Lakes Marine Park. The crew is so confident you’ll spot these magnificent creatures that they’ll give you a free cruise if you don’t. Drifting about at sea, also keep your eyes peeled for dolphins and flocks of ocean-going birds, not to mention fur seals lolling about on Cabbage Tree Island.
