Paying homage to the iconic uniforms worn by Olympic volunteers, The TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS, in collaboration with the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), today unveiled its volunteer uniforms for the race event which will take place on Sunday, 31 August 2025.

The uniform design largely replicates the iconic uniforms worn by the army of Sydney 2000 volunteers, and will be donned by thousands of volunteers who will support this year’s marathon, which in itself is a proud and enduring legacy event born out of the Sydney 2000 Games.

The 2025 course honours its Olympic legacy by starting at North Sydney Oval, echoing the historic start line of the Olympic course. From there, the route will cross the Sydney Harbour Bridge and trace sections of the original blue line still marked across the city, reflecting key parts of the course that once showcased Sydney to the world.

The TCS Sydney Marathon presented by ASICS, in collaboration with the Australian Olympic Committee (AOC), today unveiled its new-look volunteer uniforms, in a tribute to the enduring legacy of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games and paying homage to the iconic uniforms worn by Olympic volunteers.

“The TCS Sydney Marathon began as a legacy of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games, first staged in 2001, and has grown in scale and prestige to become the first Abbott World Marathon Major in the Southern Hemisphere," NSW Minister for Sport and Minister for Jobs and Tourism, Steve Kamper said.

Event organisers today revealed the uniform design to also coincide with a call for volunteers to sign up, with the official volunteer roster for the event now open.

“As we mark 100 days to go until it makes its World Major debut, as well as International Volunteer Week, it’s the perfect time to recognise the incredible volunteers whose passion has helped shape the event into what it is today, and encourage even more to get on board,” Minister Kamper said.

This year’s TCS Sydney Marathon, the first to be staged since achieving Abbott World Marathon Major status, will take place just a fortnight before the 25-year anniversary of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games.

“The Sydney 2000 Games united a city and inspired a nation, and we are proud that the TCS Sydney Marathon continues to carry that spirit forward 25-years on,” TCS Sydney Marathon Race Director, Wayne Larden said.

“Now, as part of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, the TCS Sydney Marathon delivers a significant economic boost to New South Wales and demonstrates how the legacy of the Sydney 2000 Games continues to deliver lasting benefits to our state,” he said.

The new uniforms echo the distinctive design of the Sydney 2000 Games Force uniforms, with a predominantly blue base and a bold, multi-coloured ‘Fluid Energy’ pattern across the upper half of the shirt.

“The Sydney 2000 Games were made unforgettable by the passion and dedication of more than 46,000 volunteers, a group whose efforts really defined what is still regarded as one of the greatest Games ever staged,” Mark Arbib, CEO of the Australian Olympic Committee.

“It is fantastic to see that in the lead up to the celebrations that will mark 25-years since Sydney 2000, we’ll see that iconic uniform on display again, as a powerful reminder of their enduring contribution and critically, the important role volunteers play in sport every day across this country.”

The Fluid Energy graphic, a swirling, concentric design, was central to the visual identity of the Sydney 2000 Games and remains a defining feature of this tribute. The original design was celebrated for its vibrant colour palette which, like the continent itself, was a celebration of contrasts that brought brightness and energy to the uniform. The reference to the iconic Sydney Opera House sails, which featured as a soft curve in the 2000 design, has been modernised with a sharper spike, giving the 2025 uniform a contemporary edge while staying true to the original inspiration.
