From vast cattle stations to charming hobby farms and historic estates, there are wealth of idyllic farm stays around New South Wales where you rise with the roosters, unplug and bask in the beauty of the Australian landscape.

Escape to the countryside

At Ba Mack Farmstay near Mudgee, a 3.5-hour drive northwest of Sydney, kids will have the chance to make friends with 300 merino sheep, horses, pigs, dogs, cats and more. They can learn how to groom and saddle a horse, feed the animals and bake scones for afternoon tea in the homestead kitchen. The farm can host two families at a time, sleeping in the rustic cottage or a restored ‘red rattler’ train carriage. Adults can check out Mudgee’s boutique wineries while the children attend the complimentary Kid’s Club held daily.

At Amaroo Cottage Farmstay near Bathurst, a three-hour drive west of Sydney, guests are encouraged to get involved with the real (and sometimes dirty) work of running a farm. That means mustering stock, lamb marking or shearing, depending on the season. After the chores are done, there’s time to spot the abundant native wildlife or stargaze on skies uninterrupted by artificial light. Accommodation is in a three-bedroom self-contained farmhouse with a continental breakfast basket on arrival.

Hanericka Guest House, between Wagga Wagga and Albury in the Riverina region of southwest NSW, is a small farmyard that has been welcoming guests for almost 30 years. There’s plenty of hands-on farm work to be done — sweeping out pens, putting down fresh straw, making up milk powder for lambs and collecting eggs. Kids can learn to ride horses, jump on the back of a tractor or enjoy a swimming pool and tennis courts on the grounds.

Around 200 alpacas roam the grounds at Starline Alpacas Farmstay Resort, a small property nestled between the wineries of the Hunter Valley, a three-hour drive north of Sydney. Kids will love feeding the alpacas straight from their hand, as well as feeding chickens in their coop and adult sheep. There are more than a dozen cottages and suites on the property, plus a swimming pool, spa, sauna, tennis court and children’s playground.
