Wellness comes in many forms in the North Coast New South Wales town of Byron Bay, which is often referred to as the healing heartland of Australia. From crystal readers to reiki masters, you’ll find them all in this bohemian-chic beach town. Byron has plenty of more traditional pamper palaces, too, but there are also lots of ways to bliss out beyond them. Here are some to try during your visit.

Get your yogi on

Byron Bay is home to more than a dozen yoga studios offering everything from relaxing yin classes to energising vinyasa flow sessions. In the town centre, MindBodyLife is one of Byron’s newest yoga (and Pilates) studios, with classes held in a gently heated room. Also centrally located, Bamboo Yoga School hosts classes in an atmospheric yoga ‘tentple’. For more advanced classes and teacher training, head to hip Creature Yoga in the Arts and Industry Estate, just north of the town centre.

Take a hike

Take an exhilarating hike on the Cape Byron Walking Track, which traces the Cape Byron headland, to see the iconic white lighthouse at Australia’s most easterly point. It takes about an hour to complete the 3.7km loop, but factor in extra time to watch for dolphins, whales and wallabies. Grab a snack at the Cape Byron Lighthouse Cafe, explore the small Maritime Museum inside the lighthouse, and enjoy a refreshing swim at Wategos, one of Byron’s most picturesque beaches.

Get out on the water

Practice mindfulness in nature on a sunrise kayaking trip alongside dolphins and turtles with Go Sea Kayak Byron Bay, or perhaps on a surfing or stand-up paddle boarding (SUP) lesson. The Pass is a famous surf beach with an epic right-hand point break; Lets Go Surfing Byron Bay offers surf lessons there and in other local spots. You could also join a SUP tour with Lets Go SUP, which hosts SUP safaris along the idyllic Brunswick River, 25 minutes’ drive north of Byron.

Indulge in nourishing cuisine

Byron is renowned for its clean eating scene, with most local cafés and restaurants committed to sourcing their produce as locally and as sustainably as possible. Start your day with a wholesome brunch at local favourite Bayleaf Café, or perhaps a smoothie from newer plant-based café Vagabond. For lunch, head to Three Blue Ducks at The Farm, which grows and raises most of its own produce onsite. And for dinner, try Forest, the contemporary Australian restaurant in the recently revamped Byron at Byron resort, which sources 80 per cent of its ingredients from within a three-hour drive.
