The Shoalhaven, New South Wales’s only coastal wine region, marries long sandy beaches and breezy hinterland wineries within two to three hours’ drive south of Sydney. The region’s signature French red grape chambourcin and other warm-climate varietals pair nicely with local seafood. Here’s where to sample some of the excellent wines produced in the Shoalhaven, alongside two food-focussed luxury retreats where your local wine will be paired with innovative cuisine.

Sample wine, beer and cheese at Cupitt’s

A three-hour drive down the Princes Highway from Sydney, between the South Coast towns of Milton and UlladullaCupitt’s Estate is an epicurean heaven in a beautiful coastal countryside setting. Visit the family-operated boutique winery for tastings at its cellar door and check out the estate’s microbrewery for some great craft beers. You can also sample the estate’s signature aged goat’s cheese and seasonal cheeses at its fromagerie. Make a day of it with lunch at winery’s famous restaurant overlooking the vineyard.· There’s also a renovated century-old two-bedroom cottage on the estate – a perfect base for exploring the region.

Take a deep dive into Shoalhaven wine

Want to explore the best of the Shoalhaven wine region without worrying about who’s driving? Wine Knot Tours offers full-day door-to-door tours that take in tastings at three award-winning wineries in the region, as well as a gourmet lunch and cheese and local produce samplings. You’ll visit the well-regarded Silos Estate, Cupitt’s Estate and Cambewarra Estate, which is at the foot of the rugged Cambewarra Mountain. Other options include the Foodie Tour, which includes a Devonshire tea, chocolate tasting and produce-to-plate lunch, followed by a wine tasting and ploughman’s platter. And there’s a beer and gin-focused tour as well.

Pair your wine with local seafood…

Fine wine is best paired with expertly prepared dishes using locally sourced fresh produce. At the iconic Bannisters by the Sea luxury resort at Mollymook, a beachside town between Milton and Ulladulla, you’ll find both in abundance. Bannisters is home to celebrity chef Rick Stein’s South Coast restaurant, which specialises in locally caught seafood. Freshly shucked oysters, Eden mussels and lobster thermidor are just some of the highlights on the menu. For a romantic trip away, Bannisters has three accommodation options, from the beach-chic style of The Pavilion and the luxurious Bannisters by the Sea to quiet, comfortable beach houses.

Or with Australian native ingredients

A 15-minute drive from the popular South Coast town of Berry (or a five-minute drive from the award-winning Coolangatta Estate winery), Bangalay Luxury Villas has made its mark as a regional dining destination. The resort at Shoalhaven Heads, at the southern end of the secluded Seven Mile Beach, is home to the fine-dining restaurant Bangalay Dining. Here executive chef duo Simon Evans and Thomas Chiumento create fine fare that features Australian native ingredients alongside locally sourced and foraged produce. Pair your lunch or dinner with wine from Coolangatta Estate, or from nearby Southern Highlands wineries such as Bendooley Estate and Dawning Day, which all feature on the well considered wine list.
