New South Wales has some remarkable accommodation in its national parks. Immerse yourself in the experience in these cottages and historic homes.

Hole up on the harbour at Steele Point Cottage

Enjoy the views of Sydney’s famous cityscape from the beautifully renovated Steele Point Cottage, in Sydney Harbour National Park. Built in the 1880s as a gunner’s barrack to protect the harbour, it’s now a stunning getaway for two, on the edge of a sandstone cliff in Nielsen Park, in the upmarket eastern suburb of Vaucluse. As well as waking up next to beautiful swimming spots and coastal tracks, you’ll also be close to iconic Watsons Bay and Bondi Beach

Live life on the edge at Seal Rocks Lighthouse Cottages

It’s well worth three-hour drive north of Sydney to stay at the award-winning Seal Rocks Lighthouse Cottages,. These refurbished heritage cottages, built in 1875, offer panoramic views from their perch on Sugarloaf Point, in Myall Lakes National Park. It’s a spectacular base from which to explore your surroundings, including the coastal village of Seal Rocks, kilometres of beaches, rolling sand dunes, and vast stretches of lakes and ocean: perfect for kayaking, swimming, fishing and dolphin viewing.

Jenolan Caves House, Jenolan Karst Conservation Reserve

Soak up some old world charm at the Jenolan Caves House, a historic grand hotel right next to the remarkable Jenolan Caves. The caves are part of the Greater Blue Mountains World Heritage Area, about a 2.5-hour drive from Sydney. Built in 1897 as a country retreat, in Federation Arts and Crafts style, the house offers guest rooms decorated in late Edwardian or early Victorian style, as well a grand dining room that is home to Chisholm’s Restaurant — named after a former employee, Miss Chisholm, who is now said to haunt the hotel.

Walk in the woods at Yarrangobilly Caves House

A heritage house dating back to about 1917, Yarrangobilly Caves House is in a beautiful part of the alpine Kosciuszko National Park, surrounded by tall forests, a five-hour drive from Sydney. Spend your days exploring walking tracks, taking a guided cave tour or fishing in the clear mountain streams. Swim in the naturally heated thermal pool, and cook a feast from local produce that you pick up from The Market Jindabyne on the way.

Try the settler lifestyle at Mount Wood Homestead

Head up to Corner Country, in the far northwest of NSWs, for a taste of outback settler life at the Mount Wood Homestead. A 13-hour drive from Sydney (or just 20 minutes from Tibooburra), in Sturt National Park, the homestead offers self-reliant accommodation for travellers who want to soak up some outback serenity, do some birdwatching, and gaze at some seriously starry skies.
