Just 80km south from Sydney, the beautiful city of Wollongong is surrounded by the expansive Royal National Park, the spectacular Illawarra Escarpment, pristine forests, rocky cliffs and a prized chain of surf beaches. Whether you like to explore by air, sea, foot or on two wheels, there’s plenty of adventure to be found in this coastal gem.

Have fun on the water

From walking on water with Stand Up Paddleboarding Shellharbour to throwing in a line with Aquilla Fishing Charters to cruising with Canoe and Kayak Adventures, there are waterplay activities for everyone in Wollongong.

If you’d rather take a dip or go surfing, head to one of the 17 patrolled surf beaches and various saltwater rock pools dotted along the craggy coastline. Ride the waves with surf pro Nic Squiers at Illawarra Surf Academy ― surfboards and wetsuits are provided and you can join a group lesson for some broad experience or enjoy a private session tailored just for you. As well as board riding skills, you’ll learn water safety and surf awareness.

Afterwards, sample the saltwater bounty at Lagoon Seafood Restaurant or Harbourfront Seafood Restaurant, or pick up a fresh catch from fishmonger Harley & John’s Seafood and cook your own dinner.

Cruise along the coastline

With more than 30km of bike paths winding alongside beaches and waterways, cafés, playgrounds and parklands, cycling around Wollongong is a breeze. Boomerang Bikes has two bike stations, one in North Wollongong and the other further north in Fairy Meadow, with rides available for the whole family and helmets and locks provided.

Prefer being a passenger? Book yourself in with Just Cruisin’ Motorcycle Tours, which will navigate the road for you on a chauffeured trike, sidecar or solo motorcycle tour. Feel the wind on your face, smell the salt air and hear the motor growl as you cruise the spectacular scenery along the famous Grand Pacific Drive. Highlights include the view from Bald Hill Lookout, the dramatic Sea Cliff Bridge sweeping over the Pacific Ocean and Wollongong Harbour, the only point on Australia’s east coast with two lighthouses.

Take to the skies

From cascading waterfalls and rippling hills to rugged coastal outlines and pulsing beaches with golden sand, the beauty of Wollongong is best taken in from the air. For panoramic views over a landscape that has been home to the Wodi Wodi people of the Dharawal Nation for millennia, take to the sky with Touchdown Helicopters. Glimpse Kiama and Mount Coolangatta, the Great Dividing Range and the spiritually significant Lake Illawarra saltwater lagoon on a scenic flight or aerial safari.

For unforgettable exhilaration, freefall through the air in a tandem jump with Skydive Sydney–Wollongong. Embrace the adrenaline rush as you float, mesmerised, through the sprawling vista.

Put on your walking shoes

Follow a bushwalking track through the world’s second-oldest national park and you’ll feel thoroughly refreshed by nature. Located on the southern fringe of metropolitan Sydney, the 15,000-hectare Royal National Park is criss-crossed with more than 100km of walking tracks leading to scenic lookouts, picturesque waterfalls and secluded beaches. You might even glimpse a playful whale.

The easy Winifred Falls Trail winds through banksia and gum-lined sections before arriving at a pretty waterfall on the South West Arm Creek ― a perfect spot for a picnic and a swim. Continue 300 metres downstream to the South West Arm Pool for a deeper dip.
