With food producers putting the emphasis on seasonal, regional and sustainable ingredients, you can taste the goodness in every dish served up at cafés and restaurants in Orange, a 3.5-hour drive from Sydney. Eating like a local has never been easier.

Produced with passion

Locavores appreciate The Agrestic Grocer, a 10-minute drive down Mitchell Highway northwest of Orange. This dedicated food and wine hub includes a restaurant and grocery store filled with local and regional goods, and the space also serves as the cellar door for Badlands Brewery and Pig in the House organic wines.

If you happen to be in Orange on the second Saturday of the month, any month, don’t miss the Orange Farmers Market at Northcourt, behind the Orange Regional Gallery. This is where you can meet the hobby farmers, providores, community gardeners and independent primary producers that keep the wheels of local restaurants and cafés turning. Sample everything from deli items, meats, preserves, olive oil and nuts to some of the region’s award-winning wines, beers and ciders.

Wake-up call

Café life is vibrant in Orange. Having grown from a shop-front roastery to one of Australia’s largest regional coffee roasters, Bills Beans has been the go-to for those true to the bean since 2007. Take the taste test at that original shopfront, known as Bills Beans East Orange, or try Groundstone Café, a contemporary space on Byng Street with a deliciously simple menu. It’s conveniently located within the Orange Regional Gallery and Orange Regional Museum precinct, so you won’t go hungry while wandering through these impressive exhibition spaces.

Further along the same street is Byng Street Local Store, where excellent bread and pastries are baked in-house, Allpress coffee is brewed to perfection and the breakfast and lunch menus give locally sourced ingredients the starring role. On Thursday and Friday nights from 5pm you can join the store’s Supper Club, where a four-course meal and fine wine menu showcase the region’s best ingredients.

Dine in style

Mr Lim Korean & Chinese Diner uses local and native Australian ingredients to produce modern Korean and Chinese cuisine. The setting is just as colourful as the food and the upbeat atmosphere makes this a fun night out.

Fiorini’s Ristorante Italian plates up rustic, homestyle fare in the understated surrounds of a small shack on the Orange outskirts. Be sure to book in advance and keep in mind that it’s BYO, so feel free to bring a bottle of those local wines you’ve stocked up on.

Brought to you by the owners of famed local restaurant Lolli Redini, Birdie Noshery & Drinking Est. features a fresh menu of tapas, oysters and more substantial offerings. Drinks are just as sophisticated — fine regional wines are included, along with chic cocktails, craft beers and plenty of alcohol-free options.

Treat yourself

Spilt Milk Bar is everyone’s favourite gelato stop, with every flavour made from scratch using the freshest local ingredients. Try the ricotta and lemon, or the passionfruit pavlova flavours.

Anything Grows combines a café, boutique nursery and gift shop under the one roof. The lunch menu is as fresh as the indoor plants, and the fluffy pastries, homemade cakes and passionfruit melting moments are sublime. If late breakfast is your thing, you’ll be happy to know the coconut chia pudding topped with delicious local fruits is served all day.
