For many people, sampling local produce is an integral part of the travel experience. From foraging for gourmet mushrooms to exploring vegan food trails, there’s a diverse range of foodie experiences available in New South Wales that make mealtimes even more fun. Get a taste for the state’s bounty on these wild food journeys with a focus on sustainability.

Food I Am, Wagga Wagga

As well as hosting extraordinary cooking classes with guest chefs and food treks through global culinary countries such as Vietnam and Italy, Food I Am in southern Wagga Wagga, a five-hour drive southwest of Sydney, runs fascinating food tours that visit some of the Riverina region’s top artisan producers. Your experienced foodie host will introduce you to the people behind the products, including artisans and farmers dedicated to organic, sustainable, free-range farming.

Vegetarian, Vegan and Raw Food Trail, Shoalhaven

In the Shoalhaven region of the NSW South Coast, a 2.5-hour drive south of Sydney, the Shoalhaven Visitor Centre has put together a fantastic resource of healthy eateries for visitors to try in the area. On the self-guided Vegetarian, Vegan and Raw Food Trail, you can tuck into everything from a meat-free bliss burger at the Pilgrims Vegetarian Cafes in Huskisson or Milton to raw vegan treats from the Craft Surf coffee bar in Ulladulla. There’s even vegan accommodation to discover, such as Berry’s Back 2 Earth vegan health retreat and farmstay.

Oyster sampling, South Coast

The NSW coastline from Shoalhaven south to Eden is known as the Oyster Coast and offers countless opportunities to eat the delectable shellfish. In late April, head to the Narooma Oyster Festival, a huge celebration of the culinary delicacy, where you can enjoy Angasi, Pacific and Sydney rock oysters. At Jim Wild’s Oysters in Greenwell Point near Nowra, oysters are shucked while you wait. Further south, in Tathra, award-winning Sydney rock oysters are grown in the pristine conditions of Nelson Lake by family-owned Tathra Oysters. Sample their famous oysters locally at Fat Tony’s Bar and Grill and the historic Tathra Hotel. For a memorable day out, join Captain Sponge’s Magical Oyster Tours on Pambula Lake, south of Tathra, and learn all about oyster farming.

Wild Food Adventures, Southern Highlands

Learn how to gather wild food safely with Experience Nature, an operator specialising in bespoke day trips, seasonal foraging workshops and outdoor feasts in the Southern Highlands region south of Sydney. Visit authentic working farms, taste gourmet cheeses and farm-fresh fruits matched with local wines and eat delicious meals crafted from local produce. Try the Fungi, Vine and Dine tour with a mushroom foraging expert (topped off with wine tasting at Bendooley Estate in Berrima), or the wintertime Truffle Hunts with Lunch and learn how to uncover coveted black truffles.

Mushrooming foraging, Oberon

In the magnificent plateau extremes of the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Blue Mountains, visitors can join a 4WD mushroom foraging tour in a magical Oberon pine forest with Detour Adventures. Learn to identify and collect, or simply observe or photograph wild pine mushrooms and enjoy an exhilarating journey through remote parts of the forest. The two-hour tours, which generally run around Easter, depart from the Oberon Visitor Information Centre, a 2.5-hour drive west of Sydney.

Mud crabbing, The Tweed

Mud crabs love the mangrove forests that hug the banks of the majestic Tweed River on the far North Coast. Draw on your Aboriginal guide’s ancient wisdom as you hunt for tasty mud crabs with traditional spears on Tweed Eco Cruises’ Pot to Plate Adventure, or trap crabs and pump for yabbies on a Catch a Crab tour; both tours depart from Tweed Heads. Whether you catch a feed or not, you’ll have a ball trying.
