The New South Wales Central Coast has long drawn visitors to its pristine waterways, unspoilt beaches and lush countryside. But now its food is tantalising tastebuds from coastal villages such as Patonga to the major town of Gosford. From a garden distillery to a chilled-out brewhouse, from bright and breezy seaside diners to a moody art-filled brasserie, the region is a food lovers’ paradise. And it makes a great day out, just an hour’s drive north of Sydney or a 30-minute ferry ride from Palm Beach at the tip of Sydney’s Northern Beaches.

The Box on the Water, Ettalong Beach

Drive up from Sydney — or jump on a passenger ferry at Sydney’s Palm Beach — for a memorable meal at Ettalong Beach’s waterfront restaurant The Box on the Water. Tuck into spicy stir-fried scrambled eggs or kedgeree for breakfast, and Sydney rock oysters followed by beer-battered flathead or confit duck leg for dinner, all while enjoying panoramic views of the idyllic Broken Bay. There’s also a beach kiosk and garden bar if you’re making a day of it.

The Boathouse Hotel Patonga

The tiny community of Patonga, south of Ettalong and across Broken Bay from Palm Beach, is home to an amazing dining experience. From the Patonga ferry wharf, a sea of white umbrellas beckons you to the picture-perfect ideal of a waterfront restaurant, the Boathouse Hotel Patonga. The blue and white decor continues the nautical theme and the menu leans heavily on the fruits of the sea, from seafood platters to prawn pasta. For quick bites, the Boathouse’s Fish + Chip Shop fries up a fisherman’s feast of seafood and fresh fish. You’ll love it so much, you’ll be tempted to stay on; there are apartments upstairs and Patonga Cottage next door.

The Bon Pavilion, Gosford

An hour’s drive from Sydney, Gosford is the gateway to the Central Coast. Here in this seaside town you’ll find the moody, sophisticated and arty Bon Pavilion a surprise delight amid the mostly light, breezy and beachy atmosphere of the region. Headed by executive chef Sean Connolly, Bon Pavilion has been artfully conceived as an all-encompassing foodie’s destination with a restaurant, bakery café, bar and wine store. The charcoal pit turns out succulent spatchcock and steak, and the bar spins out small plates of tapas to accompany the signature cocktails.

Distillery Botanica, Erina

Tucked away in a semi-rural pocket of Erina, a 10-minute drive from Gosford, Distillery Botanica is the birthplace of gold-medal-winning Moore’s Dry Gin and Mr Black coffee liqueur, creations of herbalist and distiller Philip Moore. Visitors enjoy trying to identify the distinct botanical flavours in the spirits and liqueurs at the distillery door. The onsite garden café, Bar Botanica, delivers on cocktails, coffee and Mr Goaty Gelato, which is churned on site. And the little deli shop sells house-made chutneys and pickles. Grab a table on the terrace or roll out a picnic rug in the lovely garden.

Six String Brewing Co, Erina

Also in Erina, Six String Brewing Co brewer Chris combines his love of beer with his love of rock’n’roll. As well as a core range of six ales, lagers and IPAs, Six String produces seasonal ranges, often adorned with labels that give a nod to music and musicians. Sample the beers in the Tap Room, where you can also learn about the brewing process and watch the brewery in action. Beer needs hearty bar food, and Sydney’s BlackBear BBQ team delivers. Meats are smoked “low’n’slow” over ironbark to fill a tempting menu of wings, nachos, burgers and brisket.
