There are many ways to discover Sydney’s diverse flavours. You can enjoy burek, honey cake and Chinese tea across its culturally rich suburbs, or seek out local ingredients and Aboriginal knowledge from its wide-ranging landscape.

Take an Aboriginal cultural tour

Sydney’s Royal Botanic Garden, on the fringe of the city centre, is home to many plants and sites of Aboriginal significance. There are fragrant lemon myrtle trees, flowering wattles that indicate when it’s eel season, and an ancient red gum used in Aboriginal initiation ceremonies. Immerse yourself in the rich Indigenous knowledge of the traditional owners of the Sydney city area by joining an Aboriginal Cultural Tour, where you can taste seasonal bush foods and learn how plants in the garden are used by First Nations people.

Meet multicultural Sydney

Explore the world’s wonders across Sydney’s many postcodes. A trip to Chinatown, bordering the city centre, can range from modern Korean fried chicken to a classic Chinese tea ceremony, thanks to a guided excursion from Taste Cultural Food Tours Inc... Or you could take a tour celebrates Liverpool, a 45-minute drive from the city, and its burek, falafel and dosa. Gourmet Safaris also showcases the Sydney’s multicultural highlights, whether you’re keen on trying the Italian delis of the inner-west suburb of Haberfield, or Kabuli pulao made by an Afghani family in their Western Sydney home. Also on the Gourmet Safaris menu: Lebanese breakfast, layered Russian honey cake and Indian chai.

Enjoy an urban farm experience

Right in the heart of Sydney’s inner west, Pocket City Farms grows organic produce over a well-cultivated stretch of Camperdown Commons. The market garden is an inspiring 1,200-square-kilometre expanse of greenery and is the backdrop to farm tours, bush tucker workshops, beekeeping classes, yoga lessons and more. You can try Pocket City Farms’s freshly picked ingredients at its on-site restaurant Acre, which serves farm-to-fork dishes from its vegetable-rich grounds. For more well-grown produce in an urban setting, head to Carriageworks Farmers Markets in Eveleigh, a 15-minute drive from the city centre, which showcases producers from around the state, such as Champion's Mountain Organics and Watkins Orchard. Or make the 80-minute drive out to the Hawkesbury, where former Longrain chef Martin Boetz makes the region’s ingredients the focus of his Cooks Shed dinners in Sackville.

Go foraging with a naturalist

Diego Bonetto grew up on an Italian dairy farm, where he learnt how to seek out wild edible ingredients from his surrounds — from the autumn sproutings of mushrooms to the blackberries that emerged during summer. Now, he leads foraging tours of the Sydney landscape: his deep knowledge of the land means his classes often sell quickly. Whether you join a workshop that takes place in Queens Park, in Sydney’s eastern suburbs, or the Blue Mountains, a 90-minute drive from the city, he’ll show you the edible riches that can be found underfoot. He’ll seek out Warrigal greens, chickweed and wood sorrel, and tell you about the many wild ingredients you’ll find across the Sydney Basin. Head on a coastal walk in Sydney’s eastern suburbs with Bonetto and his collaborator Oliver Brown and you’ll learn about the kelp and sea plants found along the coastline from Gordons Bay to Shark Point.
